OF1R - My list of Pros and Cons

by DjFI » Fri, 13 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Here's the story.

I see the game.  I think, what a hunk of junk.  The graphics look too
arcadish.  It must be totaly arcade.  Thats not what I like
I play the demo.  I think, this kicks ass.  I'm slidin, I'm grippin, I'm
leavin my marks.  The presentation is just the best.  And it proves what
it really looks like from inside an f1 car.  I wanna see more.
I play the cracked version.  I usualy do before buying iffy purchaces.
(I did with superbikes.  The next day I baught it.) This one I am happy
I tried because, now there is no way in hell i'll buy it.  Here's the
list of pros\and cons in this game.  And this is coming from a simmers
mind.

Pros
- Nice presentation.  Menus, TV graphics,***pit, etc.  *unfortunatly
this doesn't include the garage or the, 1\2 of an actual crew, pitcrew*
- Runs nice and smooth.  Big thing in all games.
- Tracks look very nice and seam realistic *with exception of few.  read
on to see.*
- Easy to set-up.
- Pretty competive AI
- All the car sounds.  From wind going over your helmet to the echo in
monaco tunnel and under the crossover bridge in japan
- Weather, espicaly rain.  Even has the little red lights on back of
each car glowing.  Also the weather can change through the race.  And
when it downpours, you'll know it when you can see only 20-30m infront
of you.

Cons
- Cars look abit too rounded.
- Damage model is almost non-existant.  Actualy its just that its very
hard to damage the car, unlike real f1's.
- Garage is very limited in options and tricky to work in.
- Physic model, turn too easy, and maybe a bit to grippy.  forsure too
grippy in rain.  (eg. that corner in hockenheim where your coming out of
the forst in to the statium section.  I took it at 210km\h.  Didn't even
take my foot of the gas.)
- Virtual hands turn very slightly.  Not shure if this was tentional.
- The track that is dear to the world has become a***job.  Yes,
monaco.  The hill down to the first hairpin, is like a roller coaster
ride.  There are hills every where, even on the starting straight, and
i'm talking rather big hills.  Only thing that they got that most f1
sims havnt, the proper run off lane and rumble strip only, in the
chicane after the tunnel.
- Graphics look arcadish\cartoony.

overall there is more downside to the ups.  It was worth the time to try
it, since now I know not to buy it.  hmm, that rhymes.

On Thu, 12 Aug 1999 03:50:00 -0700,

uhh.. Monaco, in real life, is VERY hilly. Watch the helicopter
view of Monaco. Since you have the warez version and no manual,
perhaps you don't know how to see the helicopter view.

DOH!

Actually, you are probably not playing the same version as
the rest of us.

Get a clue.

Agree - been to Monaco-strolled the circuit - VERY hilly - pretty good
aproximation on OF1R-need to be congratulated on that circuit anyway.

OF1R - My list of Pros and Cons

by DjFI » Fri, 13 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Note: I'd like to revoke most of my comments and this is my new set of
comments.

As said, "watch the helicopter view", I never was in full race before and
couldn't get the option.  But I now just watched it.  It actualy is very
convinsing.  And I now believe that it is nearly right.  But, I still have 1
problem with the monaco circut in this game.  Is the hill down to the first
hairpin really like that.  In every other game I played (GPL, F1RS, MGPRS,
GP2, etc) the hill was never like that.  If any one could get me a pic of
this part of the track and proove that it is like that, or not like that,
I'd be very apreciative.  It is the box version I've got.  I'm gonna try and
install patches.  You never know what will work.  And no game out there
needs a manual.  With every game I play, I rarely read the manual.  Only
when I get bored and for help to setup the vehicle, I read.  I'm gonna go by
each track. with my comments.

Australia - Practicaly Flawless.  I like the mock Fosters ad "Formula 1".
Brazil - Is it really that flat?  I remeber a pretty big hill going down
after turn 1.  I never noticed that here.
Argentina - I don't know much of this circut, so i'll hold back my
comments.  Looks nice tho.
San Marino - Practicaly Flawless.
Spain - Practicaly Flawless.
Monaco - As said, I'm now just not shure about the hill down to the first
hairpin.  Maybe behindu1 could reply to this one since he's been there.
Canada - Practicaly Flawless.  I like the mock adds.  "Moose Fly(Molson Dry)
and Drivers(Players)"
France - Practicaly Flawless.
England - Practicaly Flawless.
Austria - I still think Milestone SRL (EAsports) on Superbike did a better
version.  I think its missing a sweeping drop.  You know where I am talking
about.
Germany - Does the track really go that wide before you come in to the
stadium section.  I know its a drag strip, but is it really that wide?  And
inside the stadium section, the left\right turns.  Isn't it a bit hilly
there.  Like in Superbikes.
Hungary - Practicaly Flawless.
Belgum - Flawless.  Best version I've ever seen of this great and historic
track.
Italy - Practicaly Flawless.  Really nice, but I think the one in Superbike
is very accurate.
Luxemburg - Practicaly Flawless.  Nice job on that banked corner.  And the
mock add of warsteiner, game players, is an ok one.  It doesn't exactly
fit.  Like F1, Drivers or Moose Fly did.
Japan - First track I played, because it was in the demo.  And again
practicaly flawless.

Now each aspect of the game:

Cars - Do they really handle like that?  Do the breaks actualy lock up that
easily?  thing i noticed, even AI of M. Schumacher was locking it up
constantly.  As we all know, the damage model is shit.
Cameras - This is what I like the most about the game.  The driver camera,
when you play from this view you can actualy tell, this is how it looks from
inside an F1 car.  All the cameras are very well placed and have a very good
motion system.
Qualifying - We know the problem here.  3 laps stright?  I thaught it was up
to 12 laps in a 1 hour period.
AI's - They suck.  It was hell going through the first turn at spa.  I got
hit left, right and center.  It seams as they are very unaware of their
surroundings.  But can be very competive, in case of lap times, and
sometimes in passing.
Menus - not to bad.
Garage - you know it sucks.
Presentation - Finaly some one gets the F1 TV graphics right.
Sounds - Supurb.  Engines, echos, wind, rain.  Its all good.
Weather - The best i've ever seen.  and unlike in CPR, the rain isnt in the
tunnels.  Stupid Mircosoft.

Since you don't need a manual it most be ok to steal the game.  Can't wait for
your followup comments.  "This game rocks, I recommend everyone rush out and
lift a copy!",  "A must steal!", "Not worth the risk of a GPL, but only if
you're sure you won't get caught it's highly recommended!"

Let me explain something here DEMO ==  EVALUATION.  Hence the term DEMO or
DEMONSTRATOIN version.

Perhaps you can help me, I'm in need of a spell checker.  Where can I rip one off?

OF1R - My list of Pros and Cons

by DjFI » Fri, 13 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I do not rip off games.  I am happy about "testing" the full game.  The manual shot
is just cheap.  Its just me that I dont read the manual.  Don't go and lift a copy,
except for testing purposes.  Unless the game isnt up to your personal wants\needs,
than keep it.  I did this with superbike's as well.  Got the demo (demo sucked,
only action mode).  Got the full version (played for 1 hour only and loved it).
Rushed out and payed the full $75cdn.  It was 100% worth it.  The demo in this game
was also a bit sketchy.  I complement edios for actualy a good demo, but I'd like
to see more.  Like in the MGRPS demo they gave out 2 tracks.  Gives you a feel for
the whole game, but I didn't need the 2nd track for that, I found it sucked to much
to even waste any time to dl the full copy.  "Not worth the risk of a GPL, but only
if you're sure you won't get caught it's highly recommended!"  say what?  do you
mean GTA?  any hoo.  Demo does mean evaluation.  Congrats, but some times they
don't show enough.  This is my personal thaughts and saying.
Warez.  Use them, but dont abuse them.  Otherwise use them for 1 time occurances,
extended evaluation (Sbk is a good example where this was neccary).  But don't just
download them and keep them.  If I respect\enjoy the software enough, you'll see me
in the stores buying a copy.  If not, it'll hit my recycle bin.  My next question
is, is there any smart comments\questions out there?

That's a great philosophy.  If I ever get pulled over for speeding I'll have to try it
out.  "Officer, I know I was speeding but I was trying out the road.  I only did it for
an hour, so you can't give me a ticket!"  If you're going to break the law, then break
the law.  Don't *** around with something as vague as a time limit.

Piracy is piracy, *** is ***, etc, etc.  On the other hand, I've never been to
Canada.  Maybe things are different there.

no but piracy is 15% higher than the USA.  And were damn proud of it.  I am breaking the
law and proud of it. Happy?  But I will most likely buy this game, or atleast let someone
buy it for me in my upcoming birthday.  :)  any way.  Question, do you yet have any proof
about monaco?  You know that big hill down to the 1st hairpin.

That wasn't me looking for pics of Monaco, but here's a good site with some info.

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Unfortunately, it doesn't have any info on elevation changes.  The full size map is great.
If you read the text it does make reference to a large downhill run.  I'd imagine that the
track is modeled rather well.  Not one of my favorite circuits, just completed it last night
and it's a pain.  I get better the more I run it, but if you don't qualify high you're out of
it from the start.

lots of pics here, gives you an idea of the Monaco Circuit.  Game vs. Life looks fairly
close.  No picture the hairpin though.

Well, I understand the reason behind trying the software before you buy it.
The demo isn't always a good indicator of quality in the full version.  I've
bought several games that weren't worth the media they were on (X-car, Circuit
Car come to mind).  Based on the demo, I don't *want* MGPRS2 or Toca2, even
though everyone here RAVES about them.  To me, BOTH of those demos SUCK.  If it
were easier to return a program if it didn't meet your needs(percieved or
otherwise), then I'd agree with you more.  I have a shelf full of programs that
didn't...
