GPL.
Can it be done by connecting the serial ports on boths machines or will I
have to install network cards. or can you get two modems to talk to each
other without going through the telephone exchange.

Papyrus has made great serial multiplay in the past, so I see no reason to
purchase ethernet cards just for GPL.
You can goto your local computer store and purchase a "null-modem" serial
cable. Just make sure you have a free COM port available on both computers
that is not shared with a mouse or modem. Determine the size of COM connector
(DB9 - 9 pins or DB25 - 25 pins). Besure the get a null-modem cable that will
fit into the connectors of the available COM ports.
Now that you have the hardware, just fire up GPL and try it out. If the game
doesn't work first try you might want to use the Start / Programs / Accessories
/ HyperTerminal program to test the link by chatting with the other machine.
Use the "Direct COMx" selections.

OTOH, Ethernet cards are really cheap these days. You can get the
10Mbit/s variety for the equivalent of $10 - $12, the 100Mbit/s kind
starts with $15 for one card. Add to this approx. $5 for a cable (and
some terminators, depending on the system you choose), and you have a
working network for only double the sum of a decent null modem cable.
The network is much faster and more versatile than the null-modem
connection. Installation is simple and no additional software is
required. I would consider building a small network (if I didn't have
one already. :)
