At the moment I am using deja.com to browse rec.autos.simulators, and
it is incredibly annoying. Could anybody recommend a site where I can
sign up to get a proper news account. I have a couple of newsreader
programs but they need an address like news.isp.com or something. My
isp is controlled by my university and does not have newsgroup
servers.

Cheers, Nick.

If you're looking for a free news server, got to http://news.cis.dfn.de/ .  I believe there's a limitation on binary newsgroups, but otherwise everything else is provided.  If you want to pay then I would recommend Giganews.  I have it supplied through my ISP, and Giganews carries way more than anyone could ever want.

If you're looking for a free news server, got to http://news.cis.dfn.de/ .

I switched to news.cis.dfn.de a couple of months ago and I recommend it.
I live in Norway and all the free ISP's newsserver's I have tried sucks.
They don't get all the messages in a newsgroup and messages arrive very
late.
With this German news server you have to register and get a password.
You have to use your real name and a valid email address.

Jone.

...though you can get around it (as I do) by having both your
spamtrapped *and* unspamtrapped addresses being valid (yep, that
...ANTISPAM... address is a valid one. I just don't read it).

That's what I used, but if Nick is behind a filtered proxy server at the
university he probably won't be able to access it.  Perhaps he needs a web
based service that's considerably more user-friendly than deja, as do I.

I haven't done any research into web-based because I just plain don't like them, and would rather stay with NNTP.  However, groups.google.com lists a total archive of newsgroups, and there's also a free one at http://newsone.net/ .

rec.autos.simulators is a usenet newsgroup formed in December, 1993. As this group was always unmoderated there may be some spam or off topic articles included.
