Thrustmaster Rallye GT Wheel - Yuk :(

by Larr » Thu, 29 Jun 2006 06:55:14

I just got mine in.  It was out of the box a whole 20 or 30 min.  It's back
in the box and I'm seeing if I can return it.

First, the resolution sucks.  Only 512 steps for steering, and 256 steps for
the pedals.  For analog pots, that's really bad I think.  The cheap black
momo has twice that in the steering.

Secondly, the pedals are WAY too high.  I have 11.5" size feet and I have to
operate the pedals with my TOES!  If I actually put my feet up on the
pedals, my heels are 2" off the base (which is a bit small).

The wheel feels well built, but on the track I'm all over the place.  On
long straights without input it just goes back and forth all over the track.

There is a 2-3 deg area of slop in the wheel.  You can move the wheel back
and forth with no acknowledgement of the input.  You can clearly see this on
the Axis screen in the drivers.

It's not dead spot.  There is NO dead spot adjustment.

The clamping system is not secure at all, especially if your desk is rounded
on the edge.  It's better than the DFP (at least it don't fall off when you
let go), but it's weak and spongy, and the wheel rotates downward as you are
driving.  It also moves all over the place.

I'm really disappointed in this.  I had high hopes :(

FWIW...

How do i check the resolution of the pots?

I have mounted a 4cm thick wooden plate on top of the pedal base, that
way i have achieved the correct height. And i get my feet closer to seat
height.

The problem with weaving on longer straights must be down to car setup ?
Or the slop you mention. No slop in mine.

I had high hopes too, and for most things the wheel are pretty much ok.

Martin.

You don't have problems with drift on the track?

If you are in the TM control panel, and you move the wheel slightly left to
right, you are not seeing a 2-3 deg deadzone in the wheel before it
responds?

Thanks for being the guinea pig pig on this Larr...  However it would
seemingly Cemement the thoughts about Thrust-crappers since the t2 days.
They are crap, I could never make their products work right, and for hmmm 12
itmes I have bought of theirs back in the days, they were shit.  Once I got
a different wheel, I was so pissed even though relieved, as I was like "as
god as my whitness, I will never deal with spiking pots again."   Ha Ha.

I know damn well hundreds of people had same experience and moved to ecci or
TSW, or like me budget priced MS.  Thousands of posts (through 90's) can
prove it.  Now If I could mod this MS wheel, the only thing I would change
is a way to put a nicer wheel on it's chassis.

So, It would seem, that TM is like trailer trash, you just cant get the
trash out even if they move up town (IE the wheel looks better).

I actually had pretty good luck with the old TM's (TM2's).   They were built
like tanks.  Pots did go bad, but that can be expected.

I love the MS wheels.  Unfortunaltey after years and years of service mine
finally died, as as you know MS discontinued them.

The software was never really right either, and never got updated.  Not
once.

A new MS wheel like the old one with 10 bit resolution would be great :)

I'm leaning towards getting a TSW2 Cup.  I wish the new Logitech was
shipping now as I'd give that a try instead, but that thing is more months
away than I think my Momo is going to last.

To clarify, I do NOT think the Thrustmaster Rallye GT is built like crap.
It's actually quite stout.  It just doesn't perform for me and I can't drive
it.

Don't these companies know who they're selling to?  Sounds like the way
Act-Labs screwed the later versions of the Force RS (4096 res down to
256).
Glad my early Force RS is still going strong.

I recently "upgraded" my wheel from a non-ff TSW2 to a Momo DFP, keeping
the TSW pedals as they're much better than the flimsy plastic ones that
come with the Momo. I couldn't be happier with the setup. I had
originially bought the DFP as a backup wheel so I could race while
converting my TSW over to USB using a plasma lite board, but I got
hooked on the excellent FF the DFP provides.

Maybe you should consider that route, too. $80 on a DFP isn't too much,
and as the wheel is playstation compatible, you should have no trouble
selling it at a minor loss if you discover you don't like it.

cheers, uwe

I can't use a DFP.  They blew the clamp design and if you have a
rounded-edge desk it won't stay in place.

Why they shipped that without the center clamp is beyond my comprehension.

I tried one.  Took it back the same night.

I clamped it to the desk tightly, turned around to move the box out of the
way, and it literally fell right off the desk onto the floor all by itself.

C'mon Larry, I've given you all the info previously to overcome this problem
;-)

It looks like this

attach to the table like this
http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?image=200602050031sr.jpg
and with the wheel attached

Better than ANY clamp on any previous wheel of mine :-)
No excuses , DFP for the win

I understand.  I just don't have time for this crap.

I need things to work as expected out of the box.

My Momo is no issue.  My MSFFW's were no issue.

They simply blew the design of the DFP.

Then again, the DFP was never meant for PC's so that may explain it.

lol, just pulling that leg a bit..Even my Saitek R440 had a better clamp
than that .
One thing is for sure, that clamp of mine is future proof, and i dont have
to worry about wear and tear on the plastic wheel clamps.Plus it's easy to
move aside when not in use. Best thing I've ever talked my brother into
making :-)
