Does GP2 have a physics engine?

by Ford Prefec » Thu, 07 May 1998 04:00:00

Just wondered. Some guy is trying to do wet weather stuff for ICR2, and
says he can't do the physics. I would presume this is because Papy use
the FAR (Feels About Right) method, whereby they drive around and alter
the equations in the 3d engine to get it ok. However GP2 Editor 1.81
(and tons of previous versions) has a grip editor. Simply by altering
the values of tire grip the game reacts accordingly. Does GP2 use a
proper physics model? It would seem so from this.

Any thoughts welcome

That sounds remarkably like the TLAR approach to engineering...

(that looks about right!)

GP2 uses a proper physics model, as much as G. Crammond thought it to
be when coding it.

Most good GP2 carsets have edited grip-settings, to try and properly
model the different cars during a given F1 season (i.e., grip settings
in a GP2 '92 carset will be different than a '98 carset).

Not an easy question. What's "proper physics model" for example? :-)

Still it might interest you that the CIRCUITfiles contain settings for
airresistance (downforce), grip, acceleration etc..
