Perhaps from a performance standpoint but not from a redundancy standpoint.

Storagereview say raid on a desktop is pointless.

standpoint.

He's talking raid0, which is twice as bad as a single drive, from a
redundancy standpoint.

>> Put the money saved into more ram (2x512meg PC3200 or PC3500) and a better
>> videocard (X800pro or 6800).

Not only will you have two drives making noise at the same time,
they'll also consume additional power from your PSU.

I have my linux box running 24x7 (smp celeron 500, thanks to Dave
McCulloch, old mate ;-) running gentoo linux) and use an "old" 40gb
drive for backups at night. HD spins up, stuff is rsync'ed to the
backup drive, backup drive gets powered down, hey presto instant
backup. No need for RAID, and I can always just remove the backup
drive from the system and put it on the shelf (which is sort of hard
with a live RAID configuration and most el-cheapo RAID controllers out
there).

Cheers,

uwe

I remember you, not sure if that's a good or bad sign though, are you
gonna discuss grammar and language peculiarities with "Bruce from down
under" again ? :D

You've already gotten sone decent advice so I'll just throw in some
brief stuff

Athlon64 is prolly the way to go these days, not sure if I'd go PCI
Express just yet since you'll be paying a premium and AGP isn't exactly
dead yet, mate a 2800 to an inexpensive KT800 based MoBo and an ATI
Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB (very cheap these days) and you have a decently
powerful PC for a relatively modest sum of money

Nice to have you back Bart

<snip>

Well, here's where PC guys lose me. I understand that the K7VME isn't
the absolute latest and greatest, but both AnandTech and Tom's Hardware
had very nice things to say about it. What I most don't understand (and
this is purely my own ignorance) is why GPL, a sim written what -- five
years ago? -- optimized for the bog-slow CPUs of its day and graphics
cards (VooDoo?) a hundred times obsoleted, today requires some blown,
injected, water-intercooled Blast-O-Megaherz frankenstein processor and
a mobo with something like 5 times the FSB speed of 1999-2000 boxes. I
don't know what I'm missing here -- is it the many add-ons developed by
this immensely clever community since GPL was first launched that
requires such immense firepower?

Whatever the answer to THAT question, for me it's a bit of a moot point,
as I've already bought the box, and at $19.00, it's hard to see how I
went wrong. I'm sure at some point not too far down the road, I'll
upgrade the old crock, but for right now, it fills a need (POS and
general retail use, plus some games (even if it will only manage Falcon
1.0 in B&W) at a very attractive price.

Now that I've bought the thing, my task is to make it as good as I can
within a reasonable budget, "reasonable" being that
difficult-to-determine point just short of my wife hitting me in the
head with a skillet...

<snip>

<snip>

Now we're talking. I understand the Mobile Barton chip is multiplier
unlocked, but can you change the multiplier in the BIOS, or does the
motherboard have to support it?

Thanks for the education!

Yes Uncle, it is me. I promise to behave this time. Say, whatever

Kind regards

Most definitely. There are comparison pics around showing out of the box
versus those with all the mods (GPLEA cars, track textures, addon trackside
objects etc.). It has kept pace with the new stuff extraordinarily well. Of
course some of the home built tracks and car add ons are built specifically
for the very latest hardware, so it is possible to have to use the lite
versions even with a PC 6 times as powerful than when originally playing
GPL!

Still the favourite (and best looking) for some of the old timers here :)

This is the Usenet, few if anyone "behaves" on here, or in the case of
people like John Simmons, they're just being their usual grumpy selves
:D

As for ymenard, he still lurks over on the "other" news group that once
was about sim racing, AFAIK, don't frequent it anymore I'm afraid, it
contracted some kind of illness....
