Question for Randy Magruder about GPL review

AFAIK he told that as an addition for Mr.anybody that didn't know there was
some sort of "Virtual***pit" in the racing simulator.

I can't comment, but I was told almost officially that the sounds are
updated and the best it can be with the possible coding.

>In your review you say that Papyrus will be adding a virtual***pit which
>will fill in the empty space at the top and bottom of the screen.I thought
>the***pit that moves around showing G-forces and head movements was already
>implemented in the demo??

Please note that the paragraph that mentioned that the empty space
would be filled in was added to my preview by the editor.  I don't
know where he heard this ... this is the first I've heard of it, I
just hadn't gotten around to asking him what the deal was.  Either he
has more recent information than I do on that particular point, or
that needs to get corrected.  As far as showing head movements, hm...I
didn't notice that the view changed much, but the car does move around
you a little bit I think....I would have to go back and look more
closely.  If there is actual movement of the POV camera, I didn't
notice it.

Perhaps its as much a criticism of the cars as it is the game, if it
can be called a criticism.  If this is what the cars sounded like,
okay.  If not, too bad.  My comment was more on the fidelity and
'color' of the engine noises.  Compared the harmonics in CPR, GPL
feels flat, but then again these aren't turbocharged engines.  I don't
want to be unfair to Papyrus (particularly given that I'm not an
expert on car engine sounds of that era), so I simply pointed out that
I wasn't blown away by the sounds, not that they were 'bad' or
'wrong'.  I did like the wind noise though :)

Hard to do.  And don't laugh, but so far the best F1 sim sounds I've
heard come from, of all places, a Nintendo 64 Grand Prix game.  Go to
www.ign64.com and download the movies and listen to the sounds.  It
sorta sounds like they nailed it, but it is a bit hard to hear over
the stupid background music.

Some would call you a blasphemer for that last bit :).  I'm glad you
enjoyed the preview.

Btw... Randy, there is a change in the POV that is what I would call "head
panning" with the G forces  in GPL . And for the sounds..  you know they
ain't that bad, they are still the best sounds in any Papyrus title yet ;)
. Heck if you call them Mediocre, I would like to know what is the reference
sound for you (except the movies and actual in-car real life).  But maybe
they will say the "UbiSoft" excuse saying that it's really what you hear in
a F1 Helmet (better sentence for : We didn't know how to do a good engine
sound so that was the best lie that nobody could argue against us)

>When braking the whole***pit moves in and accellerating hard it moves away
>from you.

I know what you mean.  Oddly, I felt the visual effect was that the
virtual***pit moves more so than the drivers head.  Given that
depending upon your perspective they are one and the same, I just
didn't make the association (uh..duh?)<G>

SB AWE 64 through a stereo system.

I agree with you.  But I don't think that this means that the idea of
increasing the audience style should be thrown out.  I brought this
stuff up in my editorials at Digital Sportspage, if you care to read
them :)

know that the reason that developers add arcade modes

Good points.  Personally, I'd like to see more feedback from the game
to assist the driver with learning and getting better rather than
shoving in unrealistic physics.
