To test how well GPL and my cable modem service get along. I will be hosting
2 hour practice sessions through-out all of monday. There may be times that
the GPL server is not running, but I promise I will not keep it down for
long. I will cycle thru many of the tracks throughout the day. Damage will
be realistic, yet the race length itself will be short. I will most likely
start the first practice session around 7am Pacific Time, USA.
The cable modem bandwidth is well more than needed by GPL and 20 other

or suggestions. Everyone is welcome to drop in though the day.
In fact, it is 10:30pm PST on Sunday right now, I will probably have the
server up for the next 2 hours or so if you are intersted. Have fun

Feel free to drop in, the IP address is 24.1.24.139.

I've been connected to your host session...works great with my 33.6
modem.

Thanks Tim.

I just wanted to say that racing with you guys who dropped by Tim's
server last night was a blast!

Excellent practice and racing session with 5 of us online, noticed no
lag on my end at all (I'm on a ADSL connection) and Tim's machine
looked like it was handling the hosting chore well.

Hope that we can try racing with even more people soon.

I'll be dropping by your server again soon Tim.

I think I may finally have found the game that will take over
from Quake2 for my multiplayer needs, especially if the level of GPL
netplay evolves to the same point as Q2 where you can find an ongoing
multiplayer match at pretty much anytime of the day or night.

I suck, but I'll probably drop in.  I'm on a cable modem also - it will
be interesting to see the results.

Had a blast there tonight,Tim.!!! Thanks! Got to race with some
folks I've never raced with, not that I knew who they were as they
passed me, but a kick nevertheless.

Agreed thanks Tim. Just finished my first ever on-line racing
experience, man, what a blast :)

Unfortunately, I've got to work in the morning and it's 1.50 am here,
would have loved to stay a bit longer.

WOW!!!  What a blast!  I finally got to race my first online race in GPL
using this server....TOO FUN!

The highlight of my race was drag racing doctorB at Silverstone and having
my Eagle blow up in a puff of flames and smoke right in front of his Ferrari
(off to the right actually).   I lost all power and doc almost rear ended me
cause I was having trouble getting out of his way.  I couldn't tell why I
lost power till I looked at the replay.

Hard to believe I've been following all your posts and visiting your
websights  for months waiting for this sim and now I'm racing against you
guys!  Awesome!

Yes.  Thanks so much Tim!  Spent most of the evening racing there.  Was
absolutely amazing running with so many human controleld cars.

Also, I'd like to thank the people that were running at the same time I
was for being so courteous.  When people were running slow, they would
allow faster traffic through.  When people caused crashes they frequently
apologized.  This was all a very plesant suprise.  Thank you. :)

Oh... that was you!!

Nice Cam's .. they really went like rockets!!

Great day.. must have raced about 16 hours today... mainly on Tim's server..
Improved ALL my lap times today, significantly.. and I've been racing for
weeks!! (but still got a bit more to go!)

Ferrari(what else):
Kyalami: 1:25.30  <--- was 1:27.xx
Monza: 1:31.93 <---- was 1:33 (did a 1:30 in the beta.. but lost my setup)
Mosport: 1:27.40 <--- was 1:27.80
Silverstone: 1:34.31 <-- was 1:38.42
Spa: 3:30.23 <--- was 3:35.77
Zandvoort 1:31.80 <---- 1:33.40

I'm still about 5 seconds off the pace at every track.. but it is a BIG
improvement.. I was happy with my times.. maybe I'll be even faster
tomorrow!

One thing I learnt is that I make TOO MANY STUPID mistakes.. I'm sure
there's MANY people I had run-ins with today that will tell you the same
thing! One race at Silverstone, I'd spun 4 or 5 times in the opening laps,
and was taking it easy.. only to finish 3 seconds behind a group of 3 cars
infront of me.. If only I hadn't have made those stupid mistakes, I would
have been able to capitalize on theirs!

Also, I am dreadful any time I have another car around me .. I get scared by
the roar of the engine suddenly behind me, and almost always seem to spin
out within the next few corners. Got to work on this. (I haven't actually
had any computer-only races yet!!...all my playing has been online!)

Another thing.. the starts.. I can usually get the pedal down okay.. but
lose it by the first corner (once again.. it's the pressure of having a
car/cars behind me). Had a fun one at Kyalami, right guys??!!

Thanks again go out to Tim.. Also played with Randy M, Tick, and some others
I met at "The Grandstand" (was busy in there from time to time today!).

time for some sleep.. it's been an exhausting day!

It is good to hear that most folks have been courteous while racing on
your server.  I have been curious as to how the simmers out there would be
when driving in packs.  I have had some pretty abysmal sessions racing
online with people (like on Hawaii - remember that one? $5/15 minutes to
go out on the first corner again and again?!) and it seems like the folks
who are "into" this sim are also "into" racing the right way.
Respectfully, carefully and FAST.  Lets hope that this trend continues.
After I get my new computer, I will definitely see you guys at the track.
It sounds like a blast.

I have had some very good results (when my machine wasn't crashing-but
thats another story...) racing over modem as well as IP.   They really
seem to have done Multiplayer RIGHT with this sim.

Thanks, Papyrus!

Hi Doktor,

> Great day.. must have raced about 16 hours today... mainly on Tim's server..

Whew, then my 9 hours on Monday wasn't over-doing it ;)I was racing under the
name TC - The Clapper.  Made the paper a couple
times too :)

It was my first time racing on most of those tracks.  It's amazing how
muchbetter I did after 30-50 practice laps :D  I was happy to qualify 3rd (my
best)
and around 12th (or so) my worst.  Out of 20! people thats not too bad!

I forgot to press Shift-R when I was on my roof :(  Now that might notbe
stupidity -- as I was dead.  How can I press Shift -R :)  Now thats
realistic.

That's why I like Ferrari too.  Scares the hell outta the back markers orpeople
practicing.   When coming out of the pits and you scream by with
your Ferrari at the red line --- Now thats fun!.

I find the online play to be AWESOME -- it allows you to have your
fullframe-rate 28-36fps and you get to race 19 other people!!   YEAH HOOO!

Kyalami was where I qualified 7th -- inside third row  (1.31.xx).I had to weave
to the left and get on the grass to avoid someone's
Ferrari flying thru the air.  Luckily the Lotus I passed on the grass
gave me some room and I made it safely.  Finished 2nd in that
race.  The guy in first (Galvin?) was doing 1:24.xx laps!!
I spun when trying to catch him (or at least  reduce the 30 sec interval :)
Goes to show -- be consistant.  If you push too hard its not worth it.

Zandvort was the first race....
I slipped onto the grass in turn 1.  I was trying to give the other cars room
but there was no room for error -- guess what? I made one :)

My race didn't end 'till the 5th turn or so.  I was behind the slower cars now
due to my spin in turn 1.  I came up on B Young Jr. (driving a Ferrari as well)
and tried to sneak in on the inside and we made contact -- there went the front
tire and my day -- didn't try Shift-R either  :(

Mexico was the third race.  I qualified in the outside second row and got
high-centered on a tire in the 2nd turn.

Monza was fourth.  Darn fun, but missed the start because I was taking
a nap :)  Still got in the race 20 seconds late.  A note to the leaders passing
us backmarkers (16th).  Give us a chance to see you passing us ;)
I will move out of your way, but were driving on the limit as well.  It takes
time to move over (maybe wait until we are out of the turn :).  Overall,
it was fun until a Lotus rammed into me.  Out of that race as well.  Watching
these races is almost as fun as driving in them :)

The 'Ring was my last race.  I actually got a time in qualifying -- 11mins :)
The start was so-so, I passed a lot of carnage through the first 3 turns --
putting me in 5th.  Had some good racing on the first lap -- held back a
Lotus after passing him by sliding through the grass (I didn't mean to take
the short cut -- I took the last turn too fast and didn't see the 1st gear turn.

He passed me about 10 turns later.  I ended up on my roof again,  after
some tire contact.  After I retired -- everyone says, why didn't you press
Shift-R.  I reply.. "You mean I could -- awe man."  I was never thinking
about shift-R while driving.  Maybe thats what keeps me from crashing
more than I did :)

It was a great Monday thanks to Tim.  All the players were booted outtwice, but
that was in 9 hours .. Must have been his ISP?  Overall,
racing 20 people (some with better pings than others) was great!
My latency was 111ms.
