Help on video for 486 and nascar2

by Pipper1 » Sun, 17 Aug 1997 04:00:00

I have an AMD 486 133 which I overclock to 160, with a Diamond Stealth
2meg dram, my question is which video card should I get to get a better
frame rate on Nascar2, and will it work with my existing video card?

Thanks in advance,

Stick with the card you have, and start saving for a Pentium.  The
change to a new card (coupled with the fact you have a 486) will
only produce a slight improvement - money best spent elsewhere
IMHO.  The Diamond may not be the greatest, but it's still a very
good card to have.

Chips are cheap nowadays...a P150 would be around $120, and
can easily be overclocked to 200.  Just a few more items and you'll
have a real hotrod.

Cheers!

Actually, Id have to disagree with the statement it has a slight
improvement. I was running on a 486/133 with a cheap Trident video card
with only 1 meg in it. With this, I could only run in VGA with only cars
and wall textures on. I then kept the same computer, but upgraded to a
Matrox Mistique video card with EIGHT megs of memory in it. From that, I
could now run in SVGA mode car textures, walls, and objects on.

Hi Joe,

While the Diamond 2Mb card isn't one of the front-runners in the
video dept., it's no slouch either.  For you, the comparison was
with a Trident 1Mb card (a slouch) and that of a souped-up (and
very expensive) 8Mb card.

My advice to him was to save for the faster CPU, which IMO
would be more beneficial; especially when you consider the
current prices of CPU's and M-boards.

Cheers!
