Is GP2 complete?

by maneg » Wed, 09 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I was one of the people that waited for GP2 to be released all the way.
I have earlier enjoyed IC1 and 2 immensely, and was very enthusiastic
about GP2. I bought the sim when it was finally released and loved it.
But now, after reconsidering the game (the love at first sight ended), I
must say that I don't consider GP2 as a complete sim. I can't understand
how Microprose could move the release date to this extent, and still
deliver an incomplete game? Are they planning to deliver upgrades to all
the GP2 owners, so that the game/sim actually contents what a serious
sim should do, like:

Weather (I love the races where the wheather changes)
Use of all the flags (described in the manual)
Some sort of adjustable car damage (to escape from a crash in 150 mph+
without damage is ridiculous!)
Network play
Why can't I turn off the car textures (this texture is of no purpose
when racing)

GP2 is a great sim, I drive a lot, but I must admit I'm very
disappointed with the lack of features. In this respect IC2 is a much
more complete game (and it isn't necessarily second to GP2 as a sim,
either). Microprose actually displays a lack of respect for all racing
sim enthusiasts out here by delivering a limited game lacking several
important features...

PS: By the way, are there anybody out there that has played Geoff
Crammonds first racing sim, REVS? This was the racing game to first
catch my attention, I think it was (considering the older times) a
brilliant game (I played it on BBC)...

It may sound trivial but my biggest complaint was with the manual.  It
is extremely misleading and very cheaply done.  Anybody who bought the
original f1gp will be able to confirm that large parts of the GP2
manual were just ripped straight from the first game and as such a lot
of the so called circuit guides are well out of date.  I feel sorry
for anybody who was trying to use the guide for a lap of Estoril, bet
they got a pleasent suprise when the reached "the Cadwell Park bit".
Not only that but the manual implies that you will see many flags in
the game and that there will be wet races (else why would you need a
guide to racing lines in wet conditions?).  It seems that American
customers got an even worse deal as they were just fobbed off with a
black and white version.

And I know currently there are no plans to finish it either.

In a interview with Mr Crammond, PC Gamer (UK Edition) he said he would
like to add the networking features. but no mention of a time span or
addition of the promised weather was mentioned..

He did mention, however, that he is now working on stunt car racer 2,
which uses an improved GP2 graphics engine.

[Snipped]

There are a few of us around that remember Revs.  I haven't played
it recently because the last time I tried my Commodore 64 had stop
working.  I will eventually get round to replacing it.

How stupid. There's gotta be more money in continuing to work on the
next version of GP than on some stunt car rubbish.

Hi Peter,

Did you ever get a chance to play Stunt Car 1? (ignore the PC version,
the Amiga & Atari ST versions were _much_ better).

If you had, you would realise just how much many of us are looking
forward to an updated version. Sure, we would all like to see GP3 out
next year <g> but we'ld still have to wait another three years for the
hardware to catch up ;-)

Cheers,
Richard

I agree, I think the manual is awful and was obviously put together at
the last minute. Half of it is taken from the original one too.
As well as the circuit diagrams/descriptions being inadequate, there
is no decent info on how to use the dampers properly. Has anyone worked
that out yet?
