I know most of us race on their desktop PC using a wheel and pedals, but
I'm interested in people's opinions as to what would qualify as the
closest thing to real racing that you have experienced. Has anyone tried
the Nascar Silicon Motor Speedway? How about a***pit like the
Hyper-Stimulator? Does motion add to the experience or is it the sound
and visuals that really give you a suspension of disbelief?

I can only give you my views after about 5mins in a Hyperstimulator at a
show I went to, believe me it is a whole different feel than my old T1.

The first thing was actually just getting into the Hyper felt great sqeezing
into the***pit made you feel like you were really getting into a race car.
The seating position was also a great feeling you felt low to the ground and
you seem to be just peering over the wheel just like the real F1 guys, as
for the driving wow! it was great the wheel felt very precise and braking
was another experience you really had to step on that brake very hard what a
feeling :-)) and it also had speakers in the***pit that made the car
vibrate when you whent over the ripple strips or just went off the track,
which was fairly often till I got used to stepping on the breaks hard. All
in all it was a fantastic experience and would love to have one.

A fertile imagination and the brains to use it.

At Port Aventura in Spain they have a box on hydraulic stilts. Inside you
watch an F1 race on the screen and the stilts move appropriately to simulate
the G-Forces. You can't see outside so the experience is totally immersive.
Excellent.:-) Trouble is you can't control the car. Maybe next year! But
carting is the closest experience I have had to real racing because it is
real racing. It's also a good deal cheaper than fitting up a ton of
mechanical gadgetry in your living room and leaves you free to install a
sofa.

well we are pretty into our network racing and have been known to move all
our gear to the back garden on a sunny day and play 4 player network
f1rs in the sun on 28inch tv's.

We have chairs without legs so its really low down and home made wheel
and pedal kits with real steering wheels.

We spend about 2 hrs practicing and setting up the cars, 1 hr qualifing
and the 2 hr race.

One of the boyz has access to some hydralic equipment and we were seriously
thinking
of linking it up to some force feedback games, but we need info on how force
feedback works

If you get in a crash, the other guys come over and rough you up a
bit, throwing some gasoline around your chair, and lighting it on
fire.  Then they break out the Extinguishers and rescue you.  WOW, now
that was exciting just writing it.

The Richard Petty Driving Experience....highly recommended "simulation"
<G>....Loved it, everyone should do it once, and after actually handling
one, I got a whole new view on the simulator (NCRII) and setups.....fun and
useful!

Why not throw dice after the "crash":

if =<6       => let him burn
        if >6        => rescue him

Now THAT's realism.  <G>
