Thrustmaster wheel steers backwards in N4; Please help!

by Phanto » Fri, 31 Aug 2001 13:39:33

I just re-installed N4 along with my Thrustmaster T2 wheel. The controller
calibrates fine in Windows 98se, but after an apparantly successful
calibration in N4, I find that on the track when I turn the wheel to the
left, the car goes right and vice-versa.

When I use my joystick, it works fine. It's just the wheel that's backwards.
Brake & throttle work ok.

I've tried several times including creating a custom controller in Windows.
Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks a lot.

Did you first calibrate in N4 by moving your wheel all the way to the
left?

Yes, Dave, I definately turned the wheel to the left. Tried it several
times.

Yup, I tried turning to the right to calibrate also. I guess the pots are
probably drifting or spiking and causing an unwanted spike to the right.

I thought that in Nascar 3, though, that I noticed that it didn't matter
which direction I turned the wheel to select the axis.

Oh well, I guess this is an excuse to get a new wheel.

Try assigning a control to steering again.  It'll ask you to steer left? and
that should fix it.  If not steer the opposite direction of what it tells
you.

This was exactly the same problem I had, but I use Win2k and have a four
year-old Nascar wheel. I did have a T2 before it. This is functionally almost
identical. I even had the spike when turning right. I tried everything, even
calibrating the steertng backwards. Finally, it just suddenly worked. I don't
know what happened. I just started playing and it worked. I did reboot the
machine a couple times and calibrate it from the game and Windows a million
times, but it just suddently worked. I do still have the spike when turning
right, though. Think it's time for a new wheel.

If you're using the Thrustmapper, check that you haven't checked reverse
mode on the axis tab

Mark.

Do you experience the same behavior using both the DirectX and
Optimized drivers in N4?

Hi Anthony,

Yes, unfortunately I experience the problem when using either option. I have
also toggled the "polling" option under Windows. I have a feeling the
problem lies with a jittering pot on the wheel.

you have to move the wheel LEFT first when calibrating in N4...just as it
says to do

Yes, I know. We were discussing alternate methods since turning left first
causes the wheel to operate backwards. Thanks for the input, though.
