I'm still only in training, but alone on the track with a 233MHz P-II and
Voodoo-1 card I'm just getting high-20's for fps. This is with almost all
mirror details turned off and the trackside objects set at "many". Also,
turning down the trackside object count made it a bit harder on my lap times
since I lost a lot of the objects that I was using for braking points, etc.

What graphic settings are others using to get decent fps without losing too
much of the (useful) eye candy?

I just found out I'm only getting about 20fps on a 266 W/Pure 3d. I thought
it was running great until the game told me otherwise....
For me, at least, 20 FPS is plenty.

Don't worry about eye candy...try sitting in the pits with a full field and
tell us what your frame rates are.  You don't have to actually race anybody
yet :).  It's the AI cars that eat frame rates on this one.

The first thing I do to help frame rate is to turn off the mirrors -
everything.  The mirrors are very expensive in terms of both CPU
utilization and texture mapping.  I agree with the other things as well,
especially skid marks, lighting, and beveled tires, and if necessary
turn off everything in the***pit too.  Detail slider as far to the
left as you can stand it.  You can even get rid of textures on the cars;
it's not pretty, but at least it doesn't hurt your driving.

It's true that the AI have a big impact on frame rate in GPL because it
takes so much CPU to run the physics.  But all those graphics take CPU
power to put up too, especially if you are running on a Voodoo card, and
so eliminating graphics will help.

Also try turning the the engine sounds down to the minimum of 3.

>Try these:

>The detail slider all the way to the left.
>No clouds.
>No spectral lighting.
>No beveled tires.
>NO skidmarks.. a biggie.
