The first thing I do to help frame rate is to turn off the mirrors -
everything. The mirrors are very expensive in terms of both CPU
utilization and texture mapping. I agree with the other things as well,
especially skid marks, lighting, and beveled tires, and if necessary
turn off everything in the***pit too. Detail slider as far to the
left as you can stand it. You can even get rid of textures on the cars;
it's not pretty, but at least it doesn't hurt your driving.
It's true that the AI have a big impact on frame rate in GPL because it
takes so much CPU to run the physics. But all those graphics take CPU
power to put up too, especially if you are running on a Voodoo card, and
so eliminating graphics will help.
Also try turning the the engine sounds down to the minimum of 3.
