ICR2: Oversight?

by 135.26.4.200 ( » Wed, 06 Dec 1995 04:00:00

It seems that ICR2 has a huge oversight in the drivers.txt/drivers2.txt and the
sim itself.  There are only three engine options available, so how are we to
address new entries such as Toyota and Menard (even tho' there is no
Indy track where a Menard engine would be needed).
The original ICR gave choices for multiple engines and multiple chassis, which
allowed a more accurate reflection of the real world where some teams used
older chassis from other teams.
This is a big letdown on being able to customize the features for accuracy.
And smoe comments on the Paintshop feature, it seems that it was really
rushed out too quickly, some areas have to be painted upside down for proper
representation, some of the icon and iconb images are not available for use.
I certainly hope there are some updates made available quickly.

Not to mention the inability to properly depict an Eagle.

That was one of the big assets of ICR1 which NASCAR and now ICR2
unfortunately did not adopt.  Some may argue that it would be difficult to
accurately depict engines/chassis which have not even competed yet, but it
would be nice to label them properly in terms of name if not necessarily
performance.

I'd like to know why people keep coming up with NASCAR car sets; i.e., the
older versions with Oldsmobiles and Buicks, without addressing this issue at
all.

The greater problems are the inability to paint the top of the engine
cowling and the unpaintable stripes which appear 1) on the left side where
the top and side of the sidepod meets and 2) on the right side where the
cowling/cockpit and top of the sidepod meet.

Papyrus promises a patch soon...but when?

I haven't discussed this with anyone at Papyrus, but I am pretty sure that
this is because the original ICR1 had *code* in it to simulate all those
different engines.  Each engine has different characteristics, and they
aren't all encoded in the drivers*.txt files.  (For example, the weight,
center of gravity, torque/hp curve, power/fuel curve, rev limit, power/temp
curves - I bet I missed a few too.)

I would guess that Papyrus thought about adding more - for about 20 seconds,
and then they decided to go fix some bugs in the code they already had,
rather than try to add more features.  Do remember that the game is meant
to represent the 1995 season, where there were no Toyota engines, and
where Menards were only allowed at Indy.

Papyrus has, in the past, been pretty good about updates.  I know there is
a fix in the pipeline for the paintkit.

Geez, I feel like a Papyrus spokesman :-(   [I have no such capacity.  I'm
not affiliated with Papyrus in any way.]

Menards were never only allowed at Indy.  They have been able to run all
the CART races as they wish.  But because they are only allowed 50in
in CART as oppossed to 55in at Indy, there's no point in trying to run
a Menard in the rest of the series
