I understand that there is no***pit view in the upcoming game F1 by
psygnosis as in GP2.

This could be a major oversight..

Please enquire as I would like a reply.

If it is like the Playstation version, the closest thing is a view from
just above the airbox, like the actual camera angle in F1. However,
unsurprisingly, it is difficult to drive the car using this view,
particularly as I was using the Playstation joypad :)

Even Virtua Racing had the choice for a***pit view. Psygnosis have
made a strange decision. (quite possibly an expensive one too)

Sarah from Bizarre Creations said that although they could have

No***pit view, this is quite bizarre. How can it possibly be taken
seriously as a racing sim with no***pit, dead before it's released.

You don't get any mirrors anyway do you ??
All I would try and do is
  a) Raise the height of the default 'front' views, ie nose-cone view
to match that of a 'cockpit view'
  b) When this view is selected, load a 2d***pit overlay into the
     3dfx frame buffers
  c) Set the z-buffer mode so as not to overwrite the***pit
  d) Find where they clear the frame-buffer and clear it without
     overwriting the***pit.

I would not

  a) add mirrors (eeek)
  b) Add correct dials/lights/guages etc etc

Yes, read that as well.  I was just caught off guard when I heard all
this.  Somewhere along the line I thought this was going to be more of
a sim.  (I didn't know it was on the Playstation first)  I have _no_
clue where I got the idea of it being a sim though..<G>  Anyway, if
you have any luck with a***pit please let me know. ;-)

Absolutely right. I couldn't be bothered even taking a look at it knowing
this about it, let alone buying a copy. If fact if someone offered me a
"free" copy I'd tell them not to bother. As you say, how can it possibly be
taken seriously as a racing sim without this view.

Philip, I expected a slightly more open attitude from your good self!

It would be a shame if you didn't look at it because it has the most
gorgeous version of Adelaide you've ever seen. Trees overhanging the track,
all the houses and scenery at 30fps - well worth it IMO.

People who say the game doesn't have a "cockpit view" actually mean that
the game doesn't have dials and gauges - it DOES have a view from the same
position as the***pit. I drove the car in this way last time I tested
this and didn't find any problem. My only gripes with the game really would
be the setup which is oversimplified and the AI which are a bit predictable
and seem to do their own thing without enough reaction to what you are
doing - the driving model is fine and the audio/visuals are great.

I would say that it's less of a sim than our staple diet until now
(GP2/ICR2/N2) but more of a sim than Monster Truck Madness - a game I enjoy
immensely.

Give it your support, you will thank me :)

Cheers!
John
