nfs3: in car view problem

I recently fancied having a go at NFS3 after having not played it for
quite a while, but had to reinstall it due to a recent mobo and
processor upgrade causing my CD rom drive to now be on a different
letter which meant that the game could not find the CD.  Anyways after
reinstall everything seems fine except for one problem.  I cannot get
the "in car" dashboard and steering wheel.  Now this used to work fine
under my previous setup and with my Voodoo 2 card, but now I am only
able to see the dashboard etc when in software mode.  Once I change back
to my Voodoo 2 card it disappears again and no amount of view changes
makes any difference.  The view seems more akin to the bumper view than
"in car".

I've tried having "in car" as the only view available and also changing
the display resolution in case it was something absurd like that but to
no avail.  The only possible software difference between now and the
last time a played this game, that I can think of, is that I now have
DirectX 6 installed - as I said it's been a while since I played this -
but I don't see how that can be causing the problem.   This game has
always worked perfectly up until now.

Just tried uninstalling and then doing a full install, but still same
problem.

Any ideas?

I was disapointed too beacuse of this, even Quantum's and Seagate's
programs could not fix this (worked for everything else i had, when i
added a new HD to my system).

With a single V2 in glide you can't get the dashboard, but with D3D you can.
There is a setting in on of the ini-files that enables D3D for V2.
but then you cannot see the intro-movie .

Don't know if DX6 makes any difference.

The solution to this is to specify your CD drive letter when you install
Windows9x as something high, like X or Z.  That way you can change hard
drives  around or repartition or whatever and it doesn't affect the CD
drive letter.

In some cases you can manualy look through ini files and registry keys to
find where it 'remembers' the CD drive letter and just change it.  For
instace, if your CD used to be D:, but is now F:, use the search thing in
the registry to find all instances of D: and just change them to F:.

Cheers for the info.  I visited the site which said that the problem was
with 8meg Voodoo 2 cards, whereas mine is a 12meg one.  However, reading
through the problem on that site got me thinking that there may be a
setting that I had changed for my Voodoo 2 card and when I checked I
found that I had ticked "Limit texture memory to 2 Mbytes for Glide
apps".  I have a vague memory of ticking this to see if it improved
performance in other sims.  Anyways, when I unticked this box it cured
the problem.

Thanks for at least steering me in the right direction.

That would be the best solution...

Programs like Seagates Diskwizard CD-Update should do that automatically,
but with nfs3 they don't work.
Maybe nfs3 stores the information somewhere else.

With my Creative VooDoo2 12 meg.....I have a dash board. In advanced
options, make sure the "Limit texture memory to 2 MBytes for Glide apps" is
NOT checked. Worked for me!!
