Making My Own Pedals (possibly)

Hey all.. I was doin' some LFS tonight and was thinking about how awesome
the game would be with some proper pedals (that included a clutch for when
LFS comes out with Clutch support). All of this is part of my eventual plan
to make a***pit.

I'm currently using a Thrustmaster Ferarri FF wheel. I would consider
constructing my own wheel too, but I am quite fond of the FF effects and I
don't have any problems with the wheel just yet. Well okay, it's kinda small
and I was considering getting a real car wheel and trying to put it on the
Thrustmaster :)

Anyways, I figure I'd start with some pedals. I've seen a few pedal designs
and they all seem relatively simple. Use a pedal to turn a potentiometer
while providing a proper range and resistance. Now, I have some questions:

Most pedals for PC I've seen are hinged at the bottom. I was considering
making a set hinged at the top, to more accurately model that of a car. But,
I was wondering.. is this how pedals are in race cars? Are F1 pedals hinged
at the top or the bottom? What about WRC cars or racing versions of regular
street cars?

I was planning on wiring up the pedals all on their own axis through the
gameport (easy stuff). Do most games support multiple controllers? Like,
could I be using my Thrustmaster wheel through the USB for steering, and map
all my 3 pedal axis through the gameport to their proper pedals?

That's about it for now. If I am to make the pedals, I will make the frame
and such out of wood with as much metal as I can (bearings, hinges, linkage,
etc.). I'm on a student's budget anyways. Oh yeah, if you've made yourself
pedals, I'd love to hear what you'd do to make them better or any lessons
you learned making them. Thanks!

Hmm.. again, pedals hinged at the bottom. Nobody's made pedals that pivot at
the top?

I have a set that pivot at the top.  Made by a company called SRC
Racing, that has since folded.  That I even received the pedals is a
minor miracle.  Anyways... I believe that most '***' race cars have
bottom pivoting pedals.  This includes F1 and LMP675, and LMP900 cars.
I could be wrong though.  The ALMS GT and GTS cars probably have top
hinged, unless the cars are retrofitted.  That's been my experience at
least.

Take a look at Nigel's Redline pedals for a top hinge design.

I own a set of Nigel's Redline pedals.
I am very happy with them.
For the price they can't be beat.

Hi Mike,

I made my own wheel and pedals and this was something I put a lot of
thought into (top or bottom hinged).

I too thought top hinging would be better, but I wanted the unit to be
adaptable to later inacarnations, ie to go in a***pit, which I have
now built.

For this reason, I went for bottom hinging with the pedal levers
extending through slots in the chipboard base. The base is a three inch
high box with the pots, wiring and return mechanisms (bungee cord) all
hidden underneath.

Before I built the***pit, I just sat the box on the floor, but once
the***pit was made, it was just a matter of screwing to the base.

Email me if you want to know more or see some photos.

hi,im currently using a thrusty T1 using the buttons for gear change and the
flippers disconnected.Made up some pedals from wood and aluminium. The trick
bit is not using pots for steering or pedals.Using LDR's(light dependant
resistors)in a telescopic tube setup with LED.LED at one end of one tube and
LDR at end of other tube.As the pedal or steering is moved the LDR moves
towards or away from the LED giving a change in resistance. The whole setup
took some figuring out(wiring, setting ballpark resistance values the PC can
detect) but works beautifully. No more scratchy pots!

Okay. Mike has asked for some to.

I'll take some new ones today and either email them or post them on the web.

Hey, that's a nice setup Glenn.  Reminds me of a buddy who took a seat out
of a VW Rabbit and bolted it to a frame he got from work.  Very comfortable
to sit and race in, and it has wheels!   hehe
