How easy Viper is compared to GPL!

Hi sim racers

I tried Viper Racing just for fun - I'm not especially interested
in sports car racing - F1 rules... :)

Anyhow, I think the graphics in VR are excellent, and user interface is
well designed. Also the sense of driving feels quite good, the menus
are attractive, etc... But is it really so easy to drive sports cars
compared to F1's? I used the Simulation mode, damage enabled, AI skill
"Normal", short "Sprint" race. And very soon in my first session of
using the program, I could win a couple of races at the (simple) tarack
of Dayton!

Compared to the learning curve of GPL that seemed ridiculous. Can this
VR really be consired as a simulator in the sense of GPL? Or perhaps
I have already learned so much of racing car driving that a Viper
would be easy to me? :-)

Maybe you were born to race a Viper...You have found your calling in life .
Sell the house, leave the wife and kids and get out there and start racing
Vipers. It appears you are guaranteed to succeed.
Unless the viper game is not a sim. But hey they say it's a sim so good luck
on your new life ahead.

Hi sim racers

I tried the Viper Racing just for fun - actually, I'm not especially
interested in sports car racing - to me F1 rules... :-)

Anyhow, I think the graphics of VR are excellent, and user interface is
well designed. Also the sense of driving feels quite good, the menus
are attractive, etc...

But is it really so easy to drive the sports cars compared to F1's?
I used the "Simulation" mode, damage enabled, AI skill "Normal",
short "Sprint" race. And very soon in my _first_ session of using
the program, I could win a couple of races at the (simple) track
of Dayton! Never did anything like that in GPL. And still doesn't...

Compared to the learning curve of GPL that seemed ridiculous. Can this
VR really be considered as a simulator in the sense of GPL? Or perhaps
I have already learned so much of race car driving with GPL that a
real Viper would be easy to me? :-)

PS Do the tracks of VR have anything to do with real tracks in US?
At least the desert tracks seem to be quite wild...

It is much easier! GPL is very difficult to drive fast comfortably where
Viper it is not to hard to be comfortable in a few hours, GPL takes months.
As for the realism/physics model it is very much like GPL but the car feels
so much heavier and the cg is so different.
Just make sure you have a fast computer so you can get the full effect with
all the cars etc.

How refreshing, an intelligent post that refers to GPL vs another race sim. Paul

hum, lets see 1998 Viper or 1967 F1 Car, I would hope there would be a lot
of improvements in the way cars drive and handle in 31 years.
I have both GPL and Viper, and Love both of them, but I don't thinks its
fair to compare such differnet cars and times.
Sure Viper is much easier to drive and I would hope so.

Hi all,

Tell me if I'm mistaken (wouldn't be a first) but I think the ease you
refer to may be cause by the width of the track.  Of course the Viper
is also a very stable car, but when you add that to the fact that the
track is soooo wide it all becomes very easy (or it may seem so).

Maybe a tighter track would better convey the sense of speed that is
lacking to this otherwise great game.

Yep, you are comparing apples and oranges. The Viper is a kickass car that
was designed to take turns at high speeds with "ease". A '67 F1 car is a
kickass car too, in 1967. We have a little thing called technology, and 31
years of it. By the way, if you really want to see what a Viper can do, take
it out on road course, stay away from Dayton(-a).

[I wrote about Viper Racing:]
...

After having started the "Career", I found out that VR really was quite
demanding...  In the beginning you have a very, very "american car" -
heavy and not too responsive - very hard to control...

And I was really caught by the way they had made the logistics: you
have to earn money by making it well in the races, to be able to have
a good car - an extreamly American idea    :-)

But the sim (sic! did I really say that!) seems to be very good,
after my premature first low thoughts...

Happy Racing,

Arto
