jumpy steering wheel = bad pots?

by Bill Jone » Tue, 02 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Just got GPL a month ago, and I notice something while driving there that I
didn't notice in any other of my sims; the wheel (on the screen) sometimes
jumps around when I have it near center, causing me to have to correct or go
off the track.  Usually it's jumping a little left, so I have to move the
wheel to the right of center to go straight...

If the car is sitting still on the track and I turn the wheel left and
right, it seems to respond correctly on the screen without much jumping
around, though it is not as smooth as the actual turning input from me.

I moved the slider to more non-linear steering response in the Controls
screen so I can control the car a little easier, and that works, but of
course I'd rather have steering that's as smooth as I input it.

Is it possible the pots are bad in TM Nascar Pro wheel?  How do I test them
or clean them?

The wheel is about 15 months old and works well otherwise.

Hi!
I had a similar problem with Colin McRae rally, but calibrating the wheel
again and again (3-4 times) finally helped. You may have a different problem
though.

I had this problem with a T2 in GPL. In the***pit view the drivers arms and
wheel were very erratic at the center position - more noticable when first
starting the game for the day and would tend to get better as things warmed up.
Note that I did not have to be moving to see this as it would happen on track
and in the pits. It was corrected by changing the steering pot.

Bill,
That depends on how much you drive it. They might need cleaning. Howver,
something else to try first is while on the windows calibration tool,
pick the advanced tab. There is a option 'Poll with interrupts Enabled'.
Turn it off and see if that helps. If you wish to clean them, find a can of
either 'tuner cleaner',used to get at Radio Shack, or electrical contact
cleaner which you should find at any good hardware store. Unplug the unit,
remove the cover and spray the little pot on the end of the steering shaft,
especially aiming for the little slot where the three wires connect at. Let
it
dry completely before attempting to use. Good Luck .

If you are in the control panel and they are jumping while you are
trying to calibrate under games controllers then the pots are most
***y bad.  Try on another computer and if it still does it take the
pots to an eltronics store and get new ones,  Buy the good ones.

This is good advice, but I might add that working the pot back and forth
while spraying can help the cleaning process in some cases.

Great stuff, that tuner cleaner.

go to www.rs2league.com  and go to the tech page, it gives info on fixing
this, its not the pots, I forget what it Is really, I think the best
solution is a good game card but its a really good article, maybe it will
help.

I had the same problem with my T2 after installing DX7. Went back to DX6.1
and now no problems. Hope this helps...

jumpy steering wheel = bad pots?

by skot » Mon, 08 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I just recently replaced my Nascar Pro steering pot because i had a
huge "dead spot" and the car also tended to drift right or left.
I opened it up and noticed that the "grooves" on the steering pot
shaft where worn out / 'stripped'.
Luckily i had a spare pot for my T2 lying around and replaced the worn
one. Works like perfect again.
In this case, the pot is not dirty, just worn out.
Where the pot shaft slides into the steering shaft in the Nascar Pro
wheel is not exactly a genius design, but overall it was built better
than their T2's :)
