F1RC - Worth a look!

by James Pickar » Wed, 07 Mar 2001 00:03:15

I have just just tried this new F1 sim called, funny enough, Formula 1
Racing Championship.  It is by the same people who brought us F1 Racing
Simulation (F1RS) back in about '97 and eventually the Monaco F1 Racing (or
whatever it was called).  Either way, they both were pretty poor.

But their latest release, while not being perfect, is well worth a look.
The graphics are very good, sounds are a little basic, but acceptable, and
the physics are basic in nature, but acceptable.  Let me get this straight,
it's no Grand Prix Legends.  But for what it is, it does the job ok.

The biggest thing this simulation has giong for it, is the 'immersion
level', somthing most sims seem to lack.  As you travel down the straight at
Albert Park, it truly feels like you are doing 300kph.  As you sweep through
the corners, it just looks right and feels really good.

Admittedly, it has it's flaws.  AI is basic, but ok, and the physics can be
a little 'funny' at times.  Compared to F1CS and GP3, it's not far off,
maybe on par.  Personally I feel both these sims are good in their own ways,
and while F1RC isn't quite as sophisticated in someways, it makes up for it
by the sheer 'exhileration factor'.  Somthing I can't say about many, if
any, racing sims.

So if your bored with racing sims we have at the moment, looking for
somthing new (and who wouldn't be?  It's been a while  :),  then F1RC is
well worth a look.  It isn't the next GPL  (WSC is), but it will keep you
going for a while.

James

PS.  My sound is skipping for some reason.  Has anyone experienced this?  I
have a Diamond MX300 s/c, and it's never done it before.

James,

Typically, for UbiSoft, I couldn't get any of my controllers to work, at
least, not in the demo.  Not my ECCI, not my LWFF, not a TM Ferrari FF nor a
TM NASCAR Digital Pro 2 I had under test for a Car & Driver article, not
even a box-stock CH FlightStick (all of which work with most other
autoracing sims).  Ubi's had this problem with every sim since F1RS.

What kind of system are you running it on?

I tried the demo on my Voodoo2 SLI system, and it kicks me back to the desktop
when I try to start a race.  I'm wondering if this has been fixed in the final
release (ir whether there's a workaround for the demo)?

Setting up the controller is not intuitive, shame on Ubi :-(.  I had trouble
setting up my LWFF until I figured it out.  You must turn the wheel, or hold
down the button/pedal and then hit enter to "lock in" your selection.  It
does work but it's not obvious.

Uggh. You lost me with the last two lines. :-P

Just so people know, no one has yet seen the gold version of this sim. Those
are on their way to reviewers like Kenneth at High Gear right now. The
versions floating around now are beta copies with unfinished AI, etc.

Why is it that if someone writes something positive about an upcoming sim,
they are always accused of being paid by the developer?

I'd like to try it, but I've yet to get it to work with my MSFFW/USB.  It
won't recognize the steering, pedals or anything.

Ditto for Insane (which I'd REALLY like to try).

Have game developers forgotten the decades-old skill of writing Controller
routines?
