SODA! What a Hoot!

Finally got some track time on SODA.  About an hour with the Loopover
Jump track.  Really SUCKED bad at first but after that hour I had
whittled about a minute off my 5 lap time.  There is a World Record
function on the main START menu for Soda and I used that to compare my
time with others.  HEY!  I'm Ranked 29th in da World on THAT track with
2 wheel drive trucks and I still have about 150 hp to play with...Take
that you other billions and billions of people on this planet...Hey Soda
can be fun folks.

I agree, SODA can be fun if you are willing to practice the tracks.  Wow,
you are driving the 2W trucks.  They are a handful if you aren't smooth on
the pedals.  About the HP in SODA, for every 1hp you add to your truck, you
also add 10 pounds to the weight of your truck, so there is a tradeoff
between hp and truck weight.  You want enough hp, but you also want a light
truck.  Anyways, less typing and more racing!

You hit it right on the head Dave, SODA is all about ...PRACTICE, (a fast
machine helps too) those that practice and don't quit after 5 minutes
crying,"It's too hard" or "the controls suck" find a pretty fun little game
and quite worthy of the HD space it takes up.

I agree - SODA looked like it was going to be something investing some time in when I
first got it - but it just ran so badly on my P166 + millennium card.  Anyway, without
my whinge, my point is where do you draw the line between accessibility and playability
- i.e. developing a sim that not only plays well but tat can be played but the majority
of  computer owners.

My two cents

SODA! What a Hoot!

I have just finished an upgrade to a P200mmx and a Diamond Stealth II (v2100 rendition
card)  I think the card makes a big difference.   In fact my old system would only play
SODA in a very small window.  So it has been quietly sitting in a box for a month til I
could actually run tha thing.  There is still a few seconds of slowdown at the start but
then it runs very smooth.
FWIW, I've heard that the Matrox cards don't do D3D very well, I know they are 2d
screamers but I'm not sure about the 3d stuff.  But I think just about anyone without a
Rendition card will probably suffer because of it's native Rendition support.

SODA does not support D3D, and since you ask, my Millenium II works very
nicely at higher res's in D3D, most notably, FS98.

SODA! What a Hoot!

Speaking of weight and such.  i didn't start making progress til I
accidentally WAAAY overgeared 4th.  Lugged so bad I had to really watch my
lines to keep the revs up.  Once I got a semi decent top gear, the speed
came.    So is there a faq or web site that explains the setup options?  I mean
I haven't the foggiest about any of the settings and how they effect your
truck.
