Still Got N2 lurch?

by John Mcilro » Fri, 26 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Has anyone else still got Nascar 2 lurch? I've tried all of Sierra's
patches but at least once a lap I get a sharp piece of braking (without my
foot touching the pedal) and then a lurch, always to the right.
I'm using a Digital Edge F1 Sim wheel with an Intel P200 machine and
Diamond 3D Edge graphics card.
Any help would really be appreciated, since I just downloaded a touring
cars patch and I'm dying to go racing!

I thought it was just my very cheap joystick! Now youv'e got me
wondering.
I have refrained from running N2 for quite some time now 'cause that "lurch"
takes all the fun out of it.
Been saving up for a GP1 wheel, thinking this would solve the problem.
Now I'm not so sure...

You get the lurch with T2 too, even with the game card

It's not always the game, it could be the pots

With the last patch I haven't seen any controller problems.  I think the
middle patch created the lurch for those that never had it before.  But
to the best of my knowledge the final patch fixed it for everybody.  If
you still have this problem after installing the final patch, I would
suggest do a fresh install and re-patch.

Braking help OFF ? steering help OFF ?
just wondering....
I am running the game on a significantly slower machine than most folks,
and although I'm not that good at it, I don't experience the troubles
you speak of. however, when I run autobraking, as I do sometimes, when
trying to get the feel of a line, at first, I do find that the brakes
come on when not needed, Ie... anytime you dip below the blend line,
whether it's on a straight or not. here's what I run, with no lurch...

Hilights of a low end system :)

48megs ram (though most of it is just to get the loooonnng replays :)
creative Graphics Blaster 3d (4meg pci bus)
addonics sound vision 500 sound card (bleck)
14" svga monitor  (double bleck)
Ch products Gamecard 3 (just added this, and it STOPPED the twitching in
the calibration screen. not manually adjustable, as the acm card is, but
software adjustable to 32 different settings, and a special setting just
for the T2 )
I have controlled the game with :
Logitech Wingman joystick (quite a good stick, for a cheapo)
Gravis Blackhawk joystick (another nice stick, but no trim tabs :(  )

and finally, my latest addition ,which I am sure I will love, when I
learn to drive with it...
Formula T2 by thrustmaster.

I run in simulation mode, shift help on, 640 x 480, skids and paint, car
textures, and grandstands on, draw 5 front, 2 rear, hear 3, and run with
no noticeable hiccups (unless a bunch of cars are in the pits when I
pass, and then only chops for a second)

I believe that my most important addition was the gamecard. it seemed to
negate some of the NON-driver input twitches a LOT .

sorry to ramble, But it was a post somewhat similar to mine, which
helped me decide which way to go... never can tell what will help :)

>It's not always the game, it could be the pots

I just ran into this problem with my other system which my son uses to
network race N2 with me. He is using a Logitech Wingman Extreme just
for the record. When attempting to race at Taladega, you could be
holding the stick "centered" going down the backstretch and atleast
once or twice a very distinct jerk to the wall. I was also observing
very radical needle jumping when trying to calibrate in N2 which led
me to try a trick which has worked so far on my T2 when the control
becomes a little jumpy. Here is what solved the problem and this
"lurch" does seem to be directly related to the "pots":

Carefully open your respective controller (Wheel or joystick), and
locate the metal device(s) - pots. You will see wires leading to/from
here and a rotating shaft-like mechanism. Get a can of "Tuner Control"
Cleaner & Lub (Radio Shack has this for around $8 US or so. Put the
thin strawlike tube on the nozzle and give each of these pots a few
squirts on the part that rotates near to where the wires connect. Work
your wheel or stick around a little while doing this.

I know some have not had success with this method (pot could be shot I
suppose) but I do know of alot with success including myself so far.
BTW, Ironically, the Wingman Extreme was only used for a month or so.
I generally give my T2 wheel this treatment every 3 or 4 months and
all has been fine so far for nearly two years now.

Hope this helps solve some of your problems!
Ron L.
