F12k Do I need a degree to play this thing!?

by Ed Kloskowsk » Sun, 26 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Shessh, I guess maybe I should stick to an arcade racer, but I have always
enjoyed the hard core sims

F12K though I can play with all the realism options turned up!  I have no
idea how to tune a car setup (I think that they should at the least provide
some decnt one for us) so I am stuck with the defaults.

But the brakes lock the wheels up even when I set the sensitvity lower, I
cant turn into a corner under hard braking because it seems to lock the
wheels up, if I turn on anti lock, I cant slow fast enough, and auto
shifting doesnt downshift into corners so there is no help there.

This sim is frustrating as hell not to mention the fact that I just cant
race it due to poor frame rates (not a slide show, but missing enough Frames
that I cant control my car)

I just cant seem to control the car and wind up leaving the game frustrated
and annoyed rather than feeling like I had fun.

any ideas?

Ed, the first and most important thing is to get the framerate
up to a SMOOTH condition. Until you do that, you are just
not going to be able to set up or drive the car properly.
Reduce detail.. view distance, sky box, no mirrors, etc.
until it is REAL SMOOTH. Then you will have much less of a
problem.

What type of controller are you using?

Logitech FF.

I setup the controler in there but also used the in-game to knock down the
sensitivity.  thanks

Turn down the details *substantially* in the game and it will be
much easier to drive. Also, move the brake balance further
to the rear using [ and  ] . Make it f47 / r53 or something similar.

Take it slow and easy, sunday driver style until you get the hang of it.

Look a greater distance down the track, and don't worry as much about
what is directly in front of you, since it's too late to do anything
about that.. :)

Go into the season00\vehicles directory and open default.vhs with notepad.
Now edit the brake ratio from 9xxx to about 6200.
The brakes will be far easier to handle. Just try it.

Well, guys thanks for the help.  I can now complete laps pretty
consistently.

However, nothing I do makes this sim even remotely playalbe in a race.  I
used FRAPS and found I was getting 9fps at that start, and as long as I hung
with the pack I was getting 16fps, when I was more or less alone I was
getting 18... way to jerky for me.

I excused the high accident incident as my fault, but when I ran further
back they were still occuring.  I dont get to watch much F1 racing, but I
dont remeber seeing this many accidents when I do catch a race.

Could anybody please test this in multiplayer to see if ISI implemented some
sort of anti-cheat measures so that the server actually controls the car
physics and characteristics instead of the clients?

This would destroy completely any possibility of sportsmanship online
racing, as anybody could simply change their data on the client side.  I
don't have F1 2000 anymore, but I wish to know this answer, mostly for the
group's knowledge.

If you haven't already, I suggest turning
off the FF.  The feedback isn't worth the
frame rate hit.

Hi Ed,
Try this...I found it in another thread and I have just finished testing it.
I`m very impressed with the results. Go into the season00\vehicles directory
and open default.vhs with notepad. Now edit the brake ratio from 9xxx to
about 6200. The brakes will be far easier to handle.

All the best,
Lorne
