>From OGR (http://www.racesimcentral.net/)

>"Bethesda (http://www.racesimcentral.net/) has teamed up with Hot Rod Magazine
>to create Burnout: Championship Drag Racing for release in November.
>Burnout will feature 20 different vehicles, 3D-card support, LAN/modem
>play, tournaments, a VCR recording capability, and more. "

That's odd....for many years no company has produced a drag racing sim and
no there are at least two companies that are coming out with them in the
next few months. I guess these companies finally saw the need that Papyrus
and Microsoft didn't see...and I'm glad too. I hope their lack of measuring
what consumers really want and just giving them what they think MIGHT sell
comes back to haunt them on their bottom line. On second thought, it may not
hurt Microsoft...if one of these companies makes any money on the drag
racing sim, MS will simply buy the company.

GREASE.

I had both Street Rod and Street Rod 2 as well. I beat SR1 but SR2 was
especially hard ...I could never win on Mulholland, and I hardly even ever
finished it. The race in the spillway was hard until I learned the pattern
of the squares on the sides and the blocks on the bottom. After that, I won
almost every car I raced there. I also liked being able to get a '65 Mustang
fastback and a '69 Shelby in SR2.

About the upcoming drag racing sim(s),  however, I think there is a lot of
potential for them to do very well. Sure there is a lot of car setup for a
little bit of racing, but that is way it usually works out for me playing
Nascar 2 as well. The multi-player possibilities are much greater than in
other Nascar sims because you can race without having worry about some
stupid idiot*** out in turn 4 waiting to take the leaders out on the
last lap of a hotly contested online race.

This was the first I'd heard of Bethesda's drag racing sim coming out, but
Tantrum's sim seems to have a lot of promise. I don't know what classes
Bethesda has (Tantrum has only TF/D and TF/FC) but I can't wait for them to
come out. I'll be waiting for Bethesda's in November and Tantrum's to be
introduced at Pomona next year. I'm just glad someone made a drag sim, and
even more glad it wasn't Microsoft or Papyrus.

Lsatly, I say:

I too, like the idea.  I have (and fully enjoy) the more popular sims
N2/ICR2/GP2... but drag racing?  Hey... an ENTIRELY different world.  I,
for one, think it will be quite fun to pre-stage, stage... and then try
to time the lights for a good "leave".  Count me in.

Wish list time? (Are you reading Bethesda and Tantrum???)

1. Wouldn't it be ultra neat if they factor in "burn-outs" to heat
your    tires up?
2. Wouldn't it be great if one of the sims has "bracket racing"?
(It's    my understanding that's not too easy.)
3. Be sure to have a "door slammer" class.  That is, Pro Stock!
4. Would it be too much trouble to add a "street class" so we can shift
gears?  (I think many of the top of the line drag cars are
automatics.)
5. Please, please, PLEASE... do an excellent job on the sound! What a
gas it would be to crank up the 'ol Sound Blaster 64 and really
groove to the sound of a fire breathing monster engine!

I'm telling 'ya... this could be fun!

God Bless,

Andre

It's going to be a lot better if we have a clutch to race it

I know that the Tantrum version at least will include burnouts. If you
don't do it right, you will have no traction.

Bracket racing is not part of NHRA professional events so I would
guess that this will not be in the games. Heads up racing is much
better. Bracket racing is boring.

The Tantrum version will not have Pro Stock. I don't know about the
Bethesda game.

Both top fuel and funny cars use manual ***s so that is to be
expected in both games.

I'm with ya there! I want to hear my Altec Lansing subwoofer shake my
desk apart!

I sure hope so. I have been waiting for this for years.

I am by no means a drag racing aficianado, but I thought the Top Fuel and
Funny cars no only have Forward, Nuetral and Reverse.

Was it really necessary to quote the *whole* message just to add that?
Why not take two seconds to show some consideration?

Anyway, if you want a clutch why don't Bethesda (or whoever) allow
your BRAKE pedal to be used as a clutch? After you cross the line it
could revert back to being a brake again or they could allow a
keyboard button that switches it from "brake" mode to "clutch" mode,
something like that. You would never use them at the same time so
shouldn't be a problem. I've often wondered why GP2 didn't do that.
Since they have the strange start method where you cannot move before
the lights go green (makes starting too easy IMO) you never need to
use the brake to avoid "creep". Why not then allow the brake pedal to
be used as a clutch only for the start or in the pits?

Cheers!

doug reports no in car view for Bethesda's dragracing sim.  Real
shortsighted on their part.  Kinda relegates it from the sim to game
category.  Bummer!

John, how would you then stage the car without a brake? You would just
roll through the lights. If you can't stage (or try to deep stage) in
this game, then what's left?

Those screen shots look good, but no in-car view is a very minor negative
point. It seems like the two upcoming drag sims complement each other well
and not directly compete. The Bethesda sim will cover the sportsman classes
(with bracket racing-yes!) and the Tantrum sim covers only the big, bad boys
of Top Fuel. The only major class that isn't covered is Pro Stock, but
hopefully they will come in Tantrum's talked-about sequel.

Check NHRA's site...they had the original information on it about the time of
the U.S. Nationals.
