Indycar Racing II in Windows XP?

by jame » Wed, 01 May 2002 05:07:15

Having got sick and tired of waiting for Papyrus to produce a followup to
Indycar Racing II  I decided to load ICR2 onto my Windows XP PC and give it
a go again.  Its been many years since I played this game last and wondered
if my racing skills had improved since (and what the graphics looked like
since all those other sims had come out).

I installed the 1.0 version off my CD onto the hard disk and tried it
without success - it sits on the splash screen and goes no further.
I updated to DOS 1.02 without success.

I then remembered that I had to patch to a Windows version to get it running
well on my Windows 98 years ago, so downloaded the patch and gave it a go.
Still no success.  On double clicking the Indycar Racing II shortcut I just
get an error report to send to Bill Gates.

Anyone managed to get this game working in XP?

James
(when are Papy going to get out the trend of producing one after the other
Nascar Racing updates and do something different - ICR3, IRL or GPL early
80s would be great)

["james" asking about Indycar II"

Try "combability mode".

But the game sucks now that one is used to modern sims. I couldn't believe
my memory was so inaccurate when I tried out Indy II a couple of months ago.
It was almost like seing my old C64 games when I tried an emulator recently.
It's incredible how the standards change, but I had more fun in those days

I don't remember which operating system ICR was designed for, but you can try right-clicking the icon from which you launch the game, select Properties and then the Compatibility tab.  Put a check mark in the top box and select the appropriate OS.  While there, if you're running any type of themes on your system, you might disable them (third box down, I believe) when this game is running.  This doesn't disable themes on your system, only within the game itself.  If that doesn't get the game running, with the game CD (it does have a CD, right?) Start/Run/Browse, go to the CD-ROM drive and seek out either setup.exe or install.exe (whichever it has).  Once you find it, right-click on it, select Properties and then go to the Compatibility tab and put a check mark in the "Run this program in compatibility mode for: . . ."  This will actually install the program emulating Win9x (whatever) when you launch the install from Start/Run.  After it installs, do the first steps I outlined above.

There's a DOS install and one for Win95.

If all you want is to run the Cart cars, you can try another approach. Goto
http://www.geocities.com/simracingfiles/N3.html. There you can download some
files that will convert N3 to a kind of ICR3.

But, you will be racing Indy cars, with Nascar physics.

Nice racing,

IndyCars with NASCAR fysics ??? - wtf

It never failed to surprise me, back then when playing both IndyCar II
and Nascar I - getting from Indy to Nascar was like .. euhm .. quite a
difference

it

would like to see some DTM vs NASCAR on ANY given road course though ..

have you tried running it in emulation mode?  i do this for a lot of my
games that were not meant to run on 2000/xp.

tried the emulation mode originally and ended up with the same problem.
Tried disabling themes and got the same problem.

As you can see from my message I had run the DOS program from the cd
originally and got a program lockup, patched it to the latest dos version,
still got the problem and then tried the windows version patch and got the
error message.

looks like it ain't gonna work.

Papy - Get your finger out and do a CART or IRL simulation.  I've been
waiting since ICR2 for one and just keep getting Nascar sims appearing every
couple of years.  Its getting boring, so try something different!!  GPL was
a welcome change, try something different for a change.

There is a fullblown windows version, not a dos program with a windows
patch.  If you can find that, you may be able to run it.  When Sierra
repackaged the sim they included it....look for CART Racing....it is
rare...very rare...but some of the old GPLers might have it still since it
made a good track pak for GPL when they were first figuring out how to
build/convert tracks.

Weird.  I've been able to run Icr2 (dos patched) in WinXP, but alas no
sound.  In the indycar.exe properties, I have set the compatibility mode to
"Windows 95". That's all what I had needed to run it.

Maybe I'll try uninstalling and patching back to 1.02 DOS and running in
compatibility mode.

Does anyone have any ideas whether Papyrus will ever write another game
other than another NASCAR update?
