The latest issue of "American Motorcyclist" has an article about the
upcoming "AMA Superbikes" racing sim. It touts all the usual features:
tracks, realism, setup options, great graphics, etc., etc. The
interesting thing, however, is that it will support either standalone
or network play, but the network play will only be available on
dedicated servers via a subscription fee of about $14.95/month. Is this
the possible future of multiplayer sim racing? After all,
Sierra/Papyrus makes nothing on GPL other than the original purchase
price, while we spend hours and hours playing it over the Internet. I
wondered why nobody was trying to cash in on this.
