After the start I seemed to rocket into a great lead. I was able to
slow down and ease around the corners (saving tires and fuel -- or so I
thought). However, Neil's BMW soon closed in on me and I had to start
to hustle to stay ahead. "Hustle" and "stay on road" are my own version
of an oxymoron (like Jumbo Shrimp), and Neil was soon past for good.
Then I found I had cooked my tires and was unable to do more than crawl
around.
I pitted for fresh tires, and they felt great for about three or four
laps, while I tried to hustle (there's that word again!) back from dead
last. After that, it was tippy toe around the corners again.
Finally, even though I put an extra couple of laps worth of fuel in,
the old car started missing at the last sharp left hander leading up to
the start/finish "straight", and I died completely well short of the
line. I managed to coast over the line -- barely. Obviously Neil ran
out of gas even earlier than I to finish behind me.
Although the car will hold enough fuel for a 40% race, I would have
done better to have planned pit stops for new tires (and fuel). Maybe
even a two stopper.
But it did feel good to be competitive (compared to racing Neil and
David in F1 cars where I am _hopelessly_ outclassed). I guess my old
eyes and slow reaction times are more suited to these slower cars.
I can't remember: is there a Road Atlanta track available for ETCC, or
am I confusing my tracks with the TPTCC mod for N2K3? I vote for Road
Atlanta (if it exists) -- memory may be the second thing to go, but I'm
damned if I can remember what the first thing to go was. <g>
