GPL:Silverstone help.

by argh » Thu, 27 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hello,
Still trying to get my GPLRank hdc down, so
where could one find replays for Silverstone? (Lotus / Eagle / any).

Cannot find any from Schubis any more ('file not found').

I have one from G.Huttu (1.26.xx with honda) but that is just too fast for
me.
All I can see in replay analyzer when comparing to him, that he is fast and
I'm not :(
I can do steady 1.30.xx (xx=20 - 50) lap by lap by lap, but that's it.
I would very much like to break 1.30 but obviously I need to change
something, because
just more laps just doesn't seem to give me any more speed (eh...?).

Guys with quite similar pb:s on other tracks can do 1.28.xx there, so I
might be just doing something wrong.

So.
Anyone?

You might check out the track guide at
http://lightsoutracing.simplenet.com  It includes a replay of 1:27.xx.

Those three left-hand kinks are the ones you need to work on the most. The
second two especially. Very hard to get right. I've been beating my head
against Silverstone for months now and only once in my trusty old Ferrari did I
break 1:30 (1:29.99!). I got several 1:29's in the Lotus once, but since I'm
not a Lotus freak I didn't feel I had really broken any actual barrier.

Hi argh! ;-)

Silverstone is a track I like a lot (especially in races, but even in
hotlapping). I have a best of 1:28.4, but that was a bit of a fluke.I
can, though, do steady 1:29.5s or thereabouts, and this may help you:

Assuming you're starting a hotlap, stay in 5th until after the bridge,
Brake hard down to 2nd. If you can, trailbrake a bit around the sharp
right-hander, which induces a helpful small slide. Get on the power
early, and drift over to the r-h side of the track, almost to the
grass. The l-h kink here is taken in 4th, with a smallish lift.

Then accelerate again until *just* after the start of the braking area
(ie the dark line). Round the r-h in 2nd, then up to 3rd for a short
bit, before changing down again for the l-h kink. Along the Hangar
straight now in 5th.

Wait until a fair way into the "braking zone" before actually braking.
If you look carefully, there's a slight change in tone of the stripe a
little way in, and that's where I brake. Round the tight right hander
in 2nd, but be careful as it's easy to knock the wall. Up to 4th for
the short straight. Brake just before the small crowd on the left, and
go down to 2nd for the right-hander.

Up to 4th along the short straight, then down to 3rd for the left-hand
kink. Up to 5th along the straight. Don't brake until the start of the
actual corner, which you can take in a highish 3rd gear at about
110mph. Be careful with your accelerating here, as it's easy to spin.
That's a lap!

Thanks David, I got a 1:29.11 !
But no consistency yet.
The second lefthander is a place where I loose it too often (slide veeeery
wide to the grass.
If you see someone there in VROC race, it's probably me :-)

BTW.
My ISP (or it's news server) is not very consistent either.
I get some messages very delayed (like this I'm replying), and I think some
does not arrive at all.

I presume you mean the left-hander onto the hangar straight. I would say the
key is a good exit, so take an earlier apex, then feed in the throttle quite
quickly to drift the car through. This does take a bit of practice,
especially getting the turn-in point spot-on, but that's GPL for you :-)
With the right gear ratios, you can do this in 3rd, and you'll be at peak
revs just shortly after straightening out, ready to change up to 4th.

(Chapel)

Interesting. With the setup I use, the ideal speed is right on the
bounndary between a highish 2nd gear and a lower 3rd. Using 3rd gives
more stability, so that's what I use in races when not under pressure;
but using 2nd allows better acceleration. My laptimes with either
version are almost identical.

As far as gears for each corner go, this is what I do (taken from my
fastest lap of 1:28.41):

(Start) 4/5/4/3/2 (Copse)
3/4 (Maggotts)
3/2 (Becketts)
3/2 (Chapel)
3/4/5/4/3/2 (Stowe)
3/4/3/2 (Club)
3/4/3 (Abbey)
4/5/4/3 (Woodcote)
4 (Finish)

Yep. (one, two, hmm... three! Ok, now I can count. ;-)

Couldn't say this any better!

I'm quite happy with my performance at Silverstone now after couple of days.
(I haven't set the bar for me too high :).
It was one of the first tracks I started to like, but I was a bit surprised
how hard it got
when I saw some of the fastest times there and started to improve.
I felt almost  the opposite with Zandwoort.
First I was not so keen to drive there and I was very slow and felt the
track to be hard,
but when I wanted to improve my time and made my self go there and started
practising (and viewing some replays) it
somehow just 'came to me'.
Suddenly I could do low 1:27's while having my previous pb over 1:29 done in
lucky lap.
Now I can race you there online anytime!

Okay, let's see what we have next...
Oh yes.
Mosport!
I think you could say "This does take a bit of practice, but that's GPL for
you :-)" about this one too :-]

The Lotus, of course :-) It's *far* faster than anything else around
Silverstone.

<snipped>
I am of the opinion that the fewer gearshifts you need to make, the better.
For starters, it saves the gearbox (although I don't know how extensively,
if at all, gearbox wear & tear is modelled), and secondly, the extra upshift
may lose you some time (albeit not much). That's why I use 3rd. If your
laptimes are almost identical using either gear on the exit, I would be of
the opinion that you could save yourself the extra shifts, but, then again,
you're a few tenths quicker than my best lap, so maybe I'm wrong
