Upgrading Millenium G200->G400?

by Javy » Tue, 22 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi!

I've got Celeron 300A (o/c 450MHz), 64Mb 100MHz DRAMM and
a Matrox Millenium G200 AGP 8Mb.

I've heard that there has been trouble with G400 and e.g. GPL,
but is there any improvements to expect while upgrading to
Millenium G400 AGP 16Mb?

Are the other 3D games running without problems in Mille G400?

Thanks.

Well, I've heard that the G400 is fantastic for everything BUT gpl. If
you are interested in playing gpl, don't bother. It won't work.

Hi there, I was contemplating the G400 as an upgrade, and heard about
the problems it has with GPL.  But it looks like Matrox may have sorted
things out:

Woohoo if so :)

If your interested in running GPL, your best bet is to get a Voodoo II 12
meg PCI piggy-back board.

I'm running a TNT 1, 16 meg AGP card, and could never get GPL to run well
with the OpenGL patch. I then added a VII card, and WOW what a difference!

Besides you can pick one up now a days, for around $70, perhaps less if you
shop around on the net!

If you want one, let me know.  I just upgraded to a Voodoo 3 2000 so I have no
use for my Voodoo 2 12MB PCI piggy-back. Make me an offer (you pay for
shipping).  Been used less than 1 year and never overclocked.

Man, that's scary how similar your system is to mine...

Millenium G200 8MB and a V2 1000 for GPL...

I really wish GPL could run on D3D...I mean, I get a great deal better
framerates and graphic quality in the Descent 3 Demo on the G200 alone than
I get in GPL with the Voodoo!!!  That G200 just SCREAMS in D3D...

Upgrading Millenium G200->G400?

:: Man, that's scary how similar your system is to mine...

:: Millenium G200 8MB and a V2 1000 for GPL...

so the choice was really easy. Price for 300A was about 1/4 or so.

:: I really wish GPL could run on D3D...I mean, I get a great deal better
:: framerates and graphic quality in the Descent 3 Demo on the G200 alone than
:: I get in GPL with the Voodoo!!!  That G200 just SCREAMS in D3D...

Do you mean that in some games G200 would be faster than Voodoo2? With
Glide/3Dfx support for V2 or only in D3D-only games?

Maybe Descent 3 has a G200 chip specific support?

-
Anyway, it looks like am going to by the cheapest Millenium G400 16Mb
when the driver problems are over. ( And prices are reasonable. )
And add 64/128Mb of RAM.

The only doubt is, do I have enough power so that I could get all the
power from a G400? I guess I have, but does somebody have any experiences?

J.

I don't think that D3 has chip-specific support for the G200...other games
that utilize D3D well run awesome too, like ReVolt, G-Police, Need For Speed
III (tho it is better on a Voodoo)...

Riddle me this...do you ever have a problem with your system locking up in
Windows, you reboot, it POSTs, the EPA logos at the top and the BIOS info at
the bottom disappear (everything else stays), and it stops?  Mine does it on
occasion...I think it may be memory-related as it seems to happen more when
I have more stuff open...

Only thing the P2B is missing that I wish it had (and that my Abit BH6 does)
is voltage control...I'm sure this Celery could go faster than 4.5x100, but
it likely needs just another tenth or two...I have a PII 350 that runs nice,
cool, and stable at 466 MHz (3.5x133 FSB...some good cheap PC100 memory) but
it needs 2.2vCore to do so...it will run at 2.1 but not as stable, and
anything lower and it starts to get funky.
