Nascar - Sound for Thinkpads - YES!

by John Vendit » Fri, 28 Jul 1995 04:00:00

        If you have a Thinkpad and want to play Nascar with the digital
sound, here is what I did!!!

First:  Run ps2.exe in your thinkpad dir.  You have to get your sound
        card's settings.  Go to option #4 and look at the IRQ, DMA and
        your I/O Address!  Once you know what these values are exit!!

Second: Run Setup from Nascar and create a boot disk.  (You could change
        your config.sys and autoexec.bat from your harddrive, but it
        becomes a hassle after awhile,  you'll see what I mean, but
        if you really want to, you can use the PC Dos option of create
        menus and different boot straps!)

        Here is how my config.sys looks like

        DOS=HIGH,UMB
        DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
        DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
        DEVICE=C:\IBMAUDIO\AUDIODDD\TPAUDDD.SYS
        FILES=30
        BUFFERS=30
        STACKS=0,0

        And my autoexec.bat is

        PATH=C:\DOS

Third:  Now run Nascar setup and change the sound settings!
        Goto to Digital Sound and select Microsoft Sound System 8 Stereo
        Skip Confirmation
        Set you I/O Port address to the value you had in PS2.EXE
        Set DMA to 0
        And IRQ should say N/A

        From here, just save it and exit!!
        DO NOT TEST DIGITAL SOUND YET!
        AND SELECT NO MIDI MUSIC!

Fourth: Reboot you computer and load from your bootdisk.

Fifth:  **** HERE COMES THE MAGIC PART ****
        run windows  --> type  c:\windows\win :
        Now windows should make a clicking sound and it should
        abort saying can't find video diver!!

        Thats good!! Your sound car is ready now.

        run Nascar!!  And you should have digital sound!

PROBLEMS
========
========

        While I figure this myself and got the digital sound to work,
        I have created an extra problem.  Whenever I have the change to
        move the cursor, the computer will send random return key strokes
        to the game, thus switching and changing your options if you not
        watching!!!!!

        Other than that, You can play the game with digital sound.  And the
        *** return key being pressed randomly doesn't bother me anymore!
        Try it out!!

What do I have -- Computer wise
===============================

ThinkPad 750C  with 4 megs and 340 meg harddrive
thats all, no cards or anything!!!

If anyone has got a different way to get it working, please tell me
or on why that return key is being press during game play!!
