GTR2002 brake feel question

by Glen Pittma » Thu, 02 Jan 2003 08:53:06

I have been noticing that my brakes lock up rather quickly in the pedal
travel when racing the GTR mod.  I would like to have the pedal travel a
little more than half way before locking the tires.  Is there a way to do
this?  I tried changing the sensitivity  for the RZ axis, which is assigned
as my brake controls, but I didn't really notice a difference.

I am using the TSW2 wheel with a USB adapter if that makes any difference.
I have a Logitech Momo wheel here that I can connect and try, but I like the
TSW a little more, especially the pedals.

I remember someone stating in an earlier post that they changed something to
40% to make the brakes start to lock at the point where there controller
started to get the most pressure resistance, but a quick look didn't find
the thread I was looking for.

Any input is much appreciated.

I believe that your referring to a post from Haqsau, ion which he explained to
me that he uses the Logitech profiler to tweak (among other things) his brake
pedals settings.  Of course, you'd have to switch to your MOMO pedals to have
this work....

Do a message search for Haqsau, and you'll find the post.  It's about a week to
10 days old.

That was probably me, and I was doing this in the Logitech Wingman Profiler.
It allows you to adjust an axis' range and sensitivity.  I started by
reducing the sensitivity, but eventually found I got better results by
reducing the range.  I don't think you can change the axis range in F1 2002,
but you might be able to get about the same end result by tweaking the
Center value for the brake axis in your player file.  If that doesn't work,
you might be able to do it with DXTweak2, which is a bit crude but at least
DXTweak2 allows you to save and restore settings to/from files.

Gaaaah!  Now I'm having an identity crisis.  That post I made was under my
normal on-line name "Haqsau" rather than the absurd totally made up name I
used above.  ;o)

Thanks for the info.  I will try the DXTweak2 program and see if I can get
it.  That is my biggest problem with GTR2002.  I can't seem to be consistant
at braking while only using about 30-40% of the travel.

I have the opposite problem!  Make sure all axes are set to 50% in the game
itself.  Leave your Logi. stuff alone.

Keep an eye on the red bar in the joystick setup in the game when you press your
pedals.  Make sure that the bar moves up in a linear fashion from top to bottom
when pressing each pedal.  If the bar starts at half way or doesn't move until
you've moved your pedals halfway, you might need to do some tweaking with a
program like DXTweak2, but the red bars will give you a clear idea of exactly
how your pedals are functioning in the game...

Yup, now you know why that name is on your "who's calling me buddy" list on
GPLRank.  You, Jan V., and Eldred have been my "targets".  :o)  That's how I
got the scoop on Eldred joining the dark side.  I think I gave Jan a good
scare about a month ago - I passed him at Monza, and suddenly a few days
later he updated and passed me again. I haven't been able to get even close
to that lap time since.  :o(

Purely coincidental, I'm afraid Hal. This is the first I learn about you
punching through 1m29s at Monza. Nice time though!

Anyhow, forget about Monza for a while. You need to bring your other times
down to a similar level, especially at a certain German venue. <g>

<Gulp> yes that German track is a bit of an annoyance.  The Monza thing was
an experiment.  I convinced myself that my time was better spent learning to
get down to competitive lap times at one track in one game rather than
trying to learn all the tracks in all the games only  moderately well.  My
goal is to get into the 1:27's in the Eagle and Lotus, 1:28's in the
Ferrari, Brabham, and possibly Honda, and 1:29's in the BRM and Cooper.  The
idea was that once I knew what it took to go that fast I could learn the
other tracks that much more quickly.  I am right now about 0.5 to 1.0 sec.
short of all of the above, but I seem to be plateaued out there lately, so
perhaps it is time for some "cross training".  Hmm, what would I rather do,
Nurby in GPL or Donington in GTR?  Decisions, decisions....

That's an interesting concept.  Flicking between GPL, F1 2001/2, GT, N2002
etc actually *does* seem to improve my times more quickly than slogging it
out in one sim.  There was a time when I spent ages at Monza too but in the
end I was in a mental state to physically harm anyone I met who could do
1:26s. ;)

Not that I've proceded with what small improvements I made, but when I
did make a move in gplrank, it came after about a thousand FIA GT V3 laps.
Maybe if I turn that many in GTR I can go back to GPL and knock another 10
seconds off....

It's weird but GPL feels easy after playing GTR 2002 and GTR 2002 feels easy
after playing GPL...

That's a good way of putting it. It feels like it all happens a bit more
slowly, so it's easier to control. (both ways).
