Converted tracks for N3 crashing, a workaround

by Uncle Feste » Fri, 27 Apr 2001 00:46:05

Hey all,

After having crash-to-desktop experiences in N3 at both the GPL
converted Kyalami and at Spa, I decided to try some detective work &
find out why.  At Kyalami, it would boot me out right at the turn-in to
Sunset Bend.  First I tried turning down the sound acceleration in
DXDiag, all the way down.  No difference.  Then I went into N3's video
options & turned off all available options.  Going back out on the track
I now found it would go slightly further before booting me.  Now I could
exit Sunset Bend before it croaked.  Thinking it may be *** on
trying to draw-in, I refired N3 & this time I left the pits & circled
backwards-against the advice of my spotter who was nagging something
about not having any more sponsors next week if I keep this up.  Anyway,
just as I leave Leeukop Bend & halfway to the Esses, it boots me out
again.  OK... I'm on to something here.  Back in, I go to video options
& kill the D3D & go software mode.  Restart N3 & back on the track...
DAMN is that ugly!!!  Reminds me of ICR2 at Cleveland in lo-res mode.
But you know what?  No more crashing to desktop.

Spa was basically the same way as Frank described it.  I could sit in my
pit stall all day long & it was fine.  Try to pull out of my pit &
BANG.  So I dropped down to practice mode & all was great until I hit La
Source, then I got booted again.  Once I tried it in software mode, all
problems have disappeared.  Run with a full field of AI & all, no
problems.

So it seems as a workaround, if you feel you *really must* run these
tracks, you can... if your eyes don't start bleeding on you in software
mode.  Now I wonder... is this a vidcard memory issue?  Or a D3D issue?
I've got a 32MB GF2, does anyone with a 64MB card have these same
problems?  Might this be a GF problem?  How are our friends with Voodoo
cards doing at these tracks?  My system specs:

128MB PC133 RAM
Elsa 32MB GF2 GTS
SoundBlaster Live!

Converted tracks for N3 crashing, a workaround

Im using a Voodoo 5 with 128MB and have the same problem with D3D: Games
crashes for the first time when I want to leave the pits. After starting N3
again I can leave the pits and run nearly a complete lap - game crashes
again at LaSource.
The track works fine for me using the software-mode, so I think it is a
D3D-issue.

Exactly the same here. Thinking of putting my Voodoo 3
3000 back in to check things out.

Interesting.  You should had seen me in the pits at Spa, trying to spin
around on myself and hope that angle lets me go out more then 1 feet.  Tried
to go backwards also :)

I had tested other tracks without any graphics, but not in software mode.  I
use Glide, so it's not just a D3D issue.  Voodoo3 3000 AGP here.
