GPL: First multiplayer experience

Well, my first shot at running GPL in multiplayer wasn't exactly successful.
I'm on a 56K modem to a dial-up ISP and was trying to connect to Tim
McArthur's server. I was able to connect a few times, but then generally got
booted off for no apparent reason (I think I saw a very transient message
flash up about too much delay time encountered, which makes sense). In my
best connect attempt, I was able to do about 2 laps of Mexico before losing
the connection. Even at that, the warping was severe to say the least!

I guess we'll all have to get some more experience at this. For one thing,
I'm in Michigan and Tim's in California, so I don't know how badly that
affected the delay factor. I also saw a lot of on-screen messages about
people joining and leaving, so maybe others have similar problems.
