Voodoo2 lockups in GPL

I remember a thread dealing with a problem of GPL locking up after one lap
with a Voodoo2 card. I now am suffering from this problem and if anyone
remembers what the fix was please pass it on! I just purchased a Monster 3DII
and can't play GPL!

The problem is usually the fact that the V2 DX6 (from 3Dfx/Creative - don't
know about Diamond) drivers are being used. They are still beta, and going
back to the previous ones solves the problem.
