N4: how to survive a caution?

by Jon Wille » Tue, 03 Apr 2001 07:38:02

I know this has been a hot topic, but has anyone figured out how to
survive a caution without getting black flagged?

I pitted when the leaders didn't: black flag for passing under yellow.
Okay, so I go slower next time.

I didn't pit when the leaders did: the spotter's telling me to pass
the 99 at the front of the field, but stay behind the 113 at the back
of the field.  Meanwhile, he tells me to let them by as I get spun out
by the 40.  Another black flag for passing under yellow.

I'm not trying to start a gripe fest about the AI.  I just want to
know how to jump through the hoops to get a passable single-player
experience.

The ai is a known problem in many sims these days...Seems the more complex
the
behaivors they try and model, the worse it gets.  As far as pitting, I
haven't seen a black
flag...just find your guy to follow and use the right view to make sure your
behind him when you drop down to the apron.  Once you hit pitlane, you can
ignore his position.
Now, just so I'm clear,  You do know there are times you CANNOT pit right?
Usually first lap after a yellow you have to stay out...If you are not on
the lead lap
you have to wait still another lap before pitting...sorry if thats a basic
but at least it
will remove those questions.

Today in an offline at Texas, 2 cars collided when 1 pulled out of the
pits and ran into the other.  cars crashed, I swerved into the grass
to avoid them.  I got a penalty...

I know the rules are the rules, but when there's trouble, it should go
out the window... :)

Yeah, the spotter tells me when the pits are open or closed, and he
reminds me of whether I'm on the lead lap.  I'll just keep studying
those replays.

I may have to abandon any semblance of pit strategy.  The spotter gets
so confused as to where I'm supposed to be.  "Pass the 99 car."  "Let
him by!"

hehe, I tried to do my first lengthy offline race today as well, and I had
this exact thing happened at Texas!  Cars were colliding everywhere on pit
road, and I was stuck in the middle lane on pit road (not good) :-)

The most frustrating thing that happened, was we were coming down to the
green flag (after a caution), and the 5 cars in front of me decide to not
accelerate at the green, so I have to stop so that I don't pass (and get a
black flag for passing before the start/finish line), but all the cars
behind me pass us before the s/f line and didn't get a black flag.  Granted
I was only running around 35th place at the time, but still......

I forgot to mention that I had applied the 'fix' that is available at
theuspits.com
it is NOT perfect, it is not final but temporary until Papy gets their act
together.
it helps...doesn't solve everything but helps.
