My guess is that Motor City Online will --
depending on the rate at which EA continues to
lose money -- either be patched by EA to offer
singleplayer offline play, repackaged as a
singleplayer offline game by EA or cracked by some
clever programmer to enable singleplayer offline
play. Given how rapidly the economy is cooling,
it's hard to imagine a subscription service based
on fixing up and racing virtual cars making a go
of it.

Hell, I probably wouldn't even consider buying it even if it *had*
single-player mode just because of the subscription service needed to play
online. That's just lame!
If EA was smart, their little virtual town would have contracts with
manufacturers for name-brand parts, such as Firestone, Fram, Snap-On, and
Craftsman, and places like McDonald's, Sears, Pep Boys and Safeway, it would
eliminate the need for subscriptions because of all the advertising money...
Ah, if only I could make money on ideas...
But, maybe that's crazy talk. It's the marketing profession coming out in
me...
Sheesh...

I agree, to some extent. Don't forget, however, that is is also possible to
(in other games, anyway) to set up "passworded" games where only select people
could get in.
I want to like it too, I'm just afraid I'll never get the chance...

We'll just have to see whether motorheads flock to
MCO or not. Meanwhile, I am waiting for Rally
Trophy from Bugbear. THAT looks like HUGE fun.

I raced NFS5 online for several months on a 33k modem, and the
performance was generally excellent. And those servers were just the betas
for MCO.
As for MCO itself I think you'd be surprised how attractive a persistant
game-world could be to racing fans.
rms
I rather agree. I think this one will grab some types that don't
generally go for most racing sims or online games.
My prediction is that this one hits it _really_ big. Ultima Online
big.

If it's free, I'm buying it.
Simple decision for me, really. I hope it's free, because it looks really
promising.

I'll be suprised if it actually even comes out. This will be the biggest
flop
that EA has ever seen. I'm all into online games, I have played Everquest
for over a year. MC doesn't appeal to me at all. Nothing about it appeals
to me. I don't like the primative cars, I don't like the idea of the 60's
interface.
Like I said, I don't think it will ever get released.
After all who's going to play it? Most of the people here will say it's ***
because
it is not up to GPL standards (and we all know it wont be). And the casual
gamer
doesn't care about upgrading his or her car, they just want to pop the cd in
and race.
And the few casual gamers that do play it, will get wasted by the few
*** drivers
that do play it. In my opinion, bad idea. Any way you look at it.
