GP2 - problem with Cirrus Logic 5434

I have a problem, symptoms as follows:

running from DOS in either VGA or SVGA it crashes within a few seconds of
driving but if I run a race as a spectator (deselect all drivers) it runs
fine.  

It crashes if I use the joystick or keyboard.

Any suggestions
