Deadspot on Logitech FF wheel

Deadspot on Logitech FF wheel

by Dave P » Tue, 31 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hello LWFF experts,
We have several Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheels that have developed
a "dead spot", where it appears to require a few degrees of movement off center
to get a response--we opened it up and couldn't see any evidence of play in the
mechanism.  Does anybody know how to fix it?  Will replacing the pot help?
There was a post a while ago about replacing the bearings on a LWFF, but it
scrolled off of my server.
Thanks in advance!
-Dave

Is this what you refer to MECHANICAL, or is it in a game where you
find a dead zone before there's response form the car to your input ??

If it's the later, try getting dxtweak from Logitech, There's link from
my
website about it. Check under SPY's corner and under LWFF, you'll find
the link.

Deadspot on Logitech FF wheel

If the "dead spot"(sounds like my ex-wife!) seems mechanical, you might
check the large nut that is under the cover in the center of the wheel.
Gently pry the cover off and check the locking nut. Be very careful
tightning this nut, there is a circuit board under the nut which you do not
want to crack.  Good Luck.

Deadspot on Logitech FF wheel

Assuming you've got your Windows deadzone zeroed out already with DXTweak or
the like, check the plastic collar that mates the steerer shaft to the pot.
The fit has to be VERY precise, both on the collar/pot side and the
collar/steerer side.  Mine had a small amount of slack new, which I'd bet
most do given the design and price-point tolerances.  A tiny bit of epoxy
putty sorted it out.  You won't be able to "feel" this in the mechanism;
it'll only show up on the calibration screen as a bit of lag that occurs
whenever you change direction with the wheel, whatever the wheel position.
While it can certainly be annoying, it's an easy fix that makes the wheel
even MORE precise.  Just go easy with the putty.

Cheers,

Steve B.
