24x's take a bit to spin up too.  At least my Creative Labs one does.

Me too (28X NEC). And it sounds like a 747 idling.

I think 8x and up is where the long spin up times became common.

You should hear the '52x' drives we had here .. no better than any other
drive, and took an age to spin up before sounding like it was taking off!

FYI, I was *joking*. In case someone hasn't noticed, this whole thread is
baloney. Indeed a large number of people do believe in these things, which
is utterly ridiculous. Remember the claims that a music CD's sound quality
can be enhanced by coloring it with a felt-tip pen? Green-coloured pens
were said to produce the best results... ;)

Hmm... I never heard that before.  Where's my green marker...?<g>

It's time they'd reduce the spin speed. The spinup delay is very
annoying and it really doesn't seem to be actually loading at 50x the
speed, although the CD is probably undergoing quantum effects at that
speed. (hm, that might be the reason the loading takes *longer* than
expected from your viewpoint, lol).

It doesn't work--and I've got an old copy of _Syncronicity_ to prove it.

Yeah, you color the outside edge, and it reduces light leakage from the
circumference of the disk.  I remember when Stereophile was all atwitter about
the little wooden trestles which propped up your speaker cables to reduce the
capacitive interaction with the floor.
