Indy 500 - the simulation

by DR » Fri, 26 May 1995 04:00:00

Seeing as everyone's going back to their old games (Revs, etc.), I just
wondered what the records were for the old Indy500 game, back in the
dark and distant pre-F1GP and pre-IndyCar days?

My previous banzai one-off lap record was a 231.xx mph lap using the
keyboard. I went back to the game over the weekend, now with a joystick
and a few hundred-thousand miles of ICR experience and I took the Lola-
Buick up to 234.00 mph on three separate occasions.

The car is virtually undriveable, but every now and then it goes around
the track without touching the walls!

Anyone else do any better?

My best single lap on Indy 500 is 235.72.  My best 4 lap average is
234.68 My best ten lap race is 230.67, 211.04 for the 60 lap race.  I
won the full 500 once, averaging 200.89 mph.  All of these times were
done in the Lola-Buick using the keyboard.  One of my all time favorite
games.

That's kinda strange.  It didn't last more than four hours on my drive.
Of course, I had been used to NASCAR for a little bit before I tried I500
the sim.

I managed a 233.683 using the keyboard (Penske Chevrolet). But how much
speed do you scrub off in the corners? I hit 240+ and exit at 224 or so.
Seems a little drastic to me.

I got 234.54 in the Lola-Buick and 233.96 in the Penske Chevrolet.

Indy 500 may have been released in 1989, but I feel the AI is better
than NASCAR, ICR or F1GP!!!  I have always had fun racing that game.
IMHO, it is a much more entertaining game that any other computer sim!

Using the keyboard?!?!?!?  I find that very difficult to believe.  I
have done over 241 MPH in the Lola-Buick using an analog joystick.

I too have done over 241 MPH, but this was using the mouse on an Amiga.

Indy 500 really suited using a mouse.

Incidentally, I have a copy of Indy 500 - The Simulation on CD-ROM that I'd
like to get rid of.  The CD also has the manual and game "passwords".

Also on the CD are (also with the manuals and passwords):
(1) Grand Prix Circuit by Accolade
(2) Road and Track - Grand Prix Unlimited, by Accolade
(3) Stunt Driver by Spectrum Holobyte
(4) Test Drive III - The Passion, by Accolade.

Will sell cheap...  Say, around $20 plus you pay shipping.  A Pentium is
too fast to run some of these games (and then too slow with the turbo switch
off), so keep that in mind - they're probably more suited to a 486 or less.
(Indy 500, however, runs fine on my P-90)

yeah.... it's weird how I thought the AI was better in Indy500 then
all these new sims.  I think Papyrus tried to make the AI too smart and
it kinda made the computer cars less predictable.  Also, it's so much
easier and faster to drive the old Penske/chevy in I500 then the
Reynard/Ford at Indy in IndyCar Racing.  Hopefully IndyCar Racing v2.0
will go in the right direction again.
