Speedvision petition

by Shaddo » Sun, 01 Jul 2001 15:18:58

Dear Friends,

I have just read and signed the online petition:

   "Speedvision & NASCAR programming"

hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition
service, at:

   http://www.racesimcentral.net/

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might
agree, too.  If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
signing yourself.

Best wishes,

Neale Dudley Stoffberg

I wish you luck, but there is a petition to stop the sale of puppies
and kittens in pet stores on there with almost 10,000 signatures.
What do you suppose the result of that will be?

Nothing is my prediction.

If we really want to make a run at this, we need to address Congress
and the FCC regarding Fox's buying up of all sports related channels
and broadcast rights, not some hokey website.

Oval racing puts me to sleep, but even if I liked it I'd say its
reaching the point of saturation with the combined coverage of TNN,
TBS, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox, and ABC (or whatever network its on this week).

I'm in an interesting situation.  As a BIG F1 fan (as well as many other
types of racing) I was extremely dissappointed when I found out the cable
company in the area where I am moving next month does not have Speedvision.
They have every other channel...

I am going to go through some serious F1 withdrawals (as well as GP500,
Rally and of course Legends of Motorsport).  If FOX screws up Speedvision by
removing all that and replacing with NASCAR I won't miss it a bit.  NASCAR
is GREAT on Sunday's and sometimes Saturday's, but not every day.  Heck I
don't even watch FOX's daily NASCAR talk show.  They run out of things to
talk about fairly quickly IMHO.

Back to my dilemma - All I can afford is a ***inium since I give the
ex-wife $1000/month in child support and consequently I cannot put a
satellite dish on the outside if my unit.  Will a dish work from a screened
lanai?

It should if it faces south.  You might check with the condo people, I know
one guy that was allowed to place his on the roof.  What about the roof of
the porch?

I'm gonna pull out the stack of condo doc's and see what I can find about
it.  The roof of the porch might be an option.

Hate to agree, but I went to the site and left without signing because I do.
If FOX does destroy the format that has most of us here watching, then sadly
IMO, about the only thing we can do is hope someone fills the void.  I hope
they're smart enough not to do that, though.

The real question to me is, since F1 seems to be the concern of a lot of us,
would F1 even continue to sell broadcast rights to a network that would
obviously have another racing form as its primary concern?  After all, as it
now stands F1 is evidently Speedvision's crown jewel.

:

Dunno what a lanai is... is that like a deck/porch area?

If so, maybe hang it from the underside of the roof (that is, between your
window and the porch railing).  It's now in your porch area but not sticking
out.  As far as screens you're going to have to try your luck and maybe get
the larger dish size to allow for signal loss.

Seat-of-the-pants thinking tells me that metal screens would be bad but
plastic/fibreglass would be good.  I've seen fabric rain/weather covers for
the dishes in Canada that claim to not block the signal.

Good luck.  We're moving in September and the Municipal regs say I have to
ask all five or six neighbours in the subdivision before I put up a dish,
flagpole, etc.  Screw that, the dish is going up and I doubt anyone will
notice or care.

Dale.

I had to point out my dish to my neighbors, even the ones on that side of
the house...  They hide really well.

Surely you don't think your congressman gives two shits about whether
or not Speedvision shows anything but NASCAR do you? Go ahead and
write him/her -- they probably appreciate a good laugh just as much as
the next guy...

Probably not, but I know they'd have to take it more seriously than
some goofy website petition.
The operative word here would be "monopoly", which is what Fox is
attempting to create by buying up every sports related franchise and
station. Did you ever dream the government would "give two shits"
about Microsoft?

I actually don't like the government involving itself in such matters,
just stating what I thought would work, if ANYTHING would work.

I understand Tim. When I typed that, I think I was in a bad mood after
trying without success to improve my Ring time. My new policy is no
Usenet postings for at least an hour after an unsuccessful GPL session
;-)
