NFS Carbon for PC

by Ed Whit » Tue, 23 Jan 2007 21:12:16

A friend of mine went and bought EA's NFS Carbon and would actually like to
play it, it installed OK, but when started he gets tossed back to the
desktop, I don't have have his PC specs yet, only that it's a new Dell, I'll
be getting the specs when I speak to him today, I was wondering if anyone
here had tried Carbon and had any issues, or any solutions, before I get
into this. I've been to EA's forums, unfortunately several people are
complaining of this same issue, some without resolution.
I'm hoping a driver update or something simple will get it going, before I
descend into the depths of EA madness.
TIA

Just off the top of my head without knowing any specs I would say he may be
trying to run it with either a low end video card or onboard graphics. There
is a lot going on in NFS Carbon all the time and eats video and system
memory badly. If not one of the above, I would guess some type of driver
issue. After installing Carbon and starting it up it will go to a video card
setup mode before starting the game. If it doesn't get to that point, I
would lean towards a video problem.

could be a dx sound card issue; pretty easy to configure either dx or
direct and see if it starts

My first guess would be the 3D settings.

My second guess would be the copy protection is pissed off for some reason.

Turns out the processor is a Celeron, not the P4 recommended, with an
onboard Intel graphics chip, with 96Mb memory, vs the nVidia/ATI 64 MB cards
recommended. It's not looking good, but we're willing to try things. Posted
a message on the EA boards too.

sorry ed, but with specs like that you might be better running porshe
unleashed from 2000; I have a reasonably up to date system and carbon
ran so poorly on it I just uninstalled it rather than waste any more
time trying it.

That doesn't look good. The MAIN problem with the Intel GMA's is that
doesn't
do hardware T&L, and HT&L is required for most games nowadays. That
setup
may not even run NFS:Most Wanted, muchless NFS: Carbon.
