Notice the spelling of "Manx". It never modeled the Isle of Man race, just
a fictionnal race with multiple tracks that go along roads similar to the
actual real-life race.

The use of the Manx (in terms of "Residents of the island") made it possible
to create a fictionnal event on the island. Technically, they never had the
license of the actual race-itself, IIRC.

You'd have to model the amazingly bumpy surface though. Having ridden
the full circuit many times, I'm still stunned at the quick lads riding
that fast over that surface. It really is appalling...
... but I love it! :)

Sorry , Steve, I have to take this up....
The surface is *NOT* appalling - it *IS* a road race.
Tracks are super smooth and perfectly curved, banked and cambered.
Lets have that kind of surface to the GP and SBK guys and leave real surface
and "real" racing for the TT, Manx GP and the Irish Road series.
Racing on *REAL* roads is what makes events like the TT and the NorthWest
200 road races at their best.
However, there are some points where the placement of water/gas utility
covers leaves a lot to be desired ....
The exit from Governors Bridge the bikes hit a 6 inch square access plate
which kicks the bikes hard. Frighteningly the riders don't slow down for it
OR try to miss it !!

I take your point - being used to riding tracks, I was quite amazed the
first time I went to the TT when I saw how fast these guys were going,
inches away from a dry-stone wall, over pot-holes, manhole covers, white
lines, overbanding, etc. When I actually rode the circuit at a
reasonably high speed my respect for the guys grew even more.
I thought it was a terrible surface for racing on, but as you say, it
/IS/ a /ROAD/ race, not a track race!
It makes them ***y scary too! :)
I think that was one of the first things that struck me - coming off the
ferry and riding from Douglas to Ramsey over the mountain, and suddenly
realising that this pretty much was the course was a bit of a surprise.
However when you a weaving around manhole covers at 60 mph and then
realise that the racers come through here at something like 150 - 160
mph it really makes you wonder how (and why!) they do it!
I always found crossing the railway tracks up on the mountain to be the
worst bit - not from that fact that they were slippery, just you don't
expect that kind of smack through the suspension as you cross them at
speed.
Of course, all this reminiscing is now making me wish I'd gone this
year.... :(

Hey, Steve, to make you feel better about it we had to endure TWO days where
the marshals kept the roads closed for 5 hours awaiting a weather break.
Standing around in the wet was not pleasant :-(
Unfortunately, this was accented with Joey going past in a VTR/SP-1/RC-51
with Sleight's engine - AWESOME :-)
Sorry, maybe next year you can join us - YES I *DO* plan to endure the 4
hours of sea-sickness on a cramped ferry :-)
Cheers
Peter
I saw the scene on the TV - it was the first Saturday wasn't it?
Now that would have been good to see. Where did you take up vantage
point?
I never thought the crossing was that bad, but I don't suffer from sea
sickness! My wife however.... well, best not to talk about it!
Seriously, if you do go next year, drop me a line and I'll let you know
where myself and the guys will be (I've decided I'm definitely going,
finances permitting). I'll be the one of the bronze/silver Hayabusa,
going really slowly! :)
