Hello

First I want to congratulate Ubisoft of this exelent simulator, great
graphics, car handling etc.
But, :-) what I don't understand is sounds, why did Ubisoft leave these
terrible sounds in final game !!!

The engine sounds just like subway train, especially when short shifting and
spinning wheels reminds
me those glory days of Commodore 64.

I think that besides graphics, sounds are THE most important factor of
making good atmosphere in
simulator. You just don't get the feeling of driving 800+ hp racing car if
it sounds like subway train.

CPR have trulu exelent engine sound, solely this is enough reason to start
CPR.
Ubisoft, check CPR ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I hope Ubisoft will patch at least engine sound.

My system:
P133
SB16
24 MB
Pure 3D
Sierra Screamin 3D

My question is this, has Ubisoft at least connected the sound of the
engine to what the engine is doing?  In CPR what you hear is a "canned"
sound and is not tied to actual revs, therefore it is extremely
difficult to shift based on audio cues.

I think the sound in F1RS is pretty close to the sound you hear on TV in
the***pit shots...
What I don't like is that there is almost no connection between the
rpm's
and the frequency of the sound, it's either on or off.

Don't have that problem myself. Engine sound is linked nicely to rpm!

Agreed on all accounts. Once you get used to the engine noise it is quite
nice really and conveys the ultra high rpms in a modern F1 engine very
well IMHO.

Some of the ancillary sounds are poor though - skidding in the rain,
bottoming out, etc. But my main problem with the sound is that there is
no feedback from the tyres except when traction has alreayd been lost.
GP2 is still the benchmark in this respect - by listening to the tyres
you can accurately judge the amount of grip available.

Cheers,
Richard

What you hear on TV is not what the drivers hear when they are driving.
I have driven Formula 4 car and when you hear that racing engine roar :-)
it really push adrenalin in to your veins.
That is not the case in F1RS, I know this is simulator but they could have
done
much better job in sound field.

Take care

Turn it up. No Louder. Louder Still. (Get that sub-woofer you've been
promising yourself!).

The trouble with judging sound is that most people play back sound on their
PC's through tiny speakers and at a fraction of the dB level experienced
from the***pit of a race car. Try it when the kids are in bed or with a
good set of headphones... when it's almost too loud to be bearable then try
& judge if they've got it right! Works for me but then I go back to the less
realistic approach & turn it back down and content myself with not having to
put in earplugs & wear a fire suit hood and crash helmet to be able to stand
the noise for the race duration.

Actually, the driver of an F1 car hears relatively little compared to
the wondrous noise that assails us spectators.  He is in front of the
engine, so all he hears is the induction noise which is going on just
above his head. Induction noise is much softer than exhaust noise and
plus the driver is wearing all his protective gear. When is there going
to be a game released when the***pit sound is REALISTIC?

Are you saying that the car goes faster than Mach1?? Well, some
British cars do, but they ain't F1.....

The drivers aren't wearing earplugs for nothing, you know...

No no no, what I meant was that the exhaust system is aiming away from
the driver, so therefore he will barely hear it.  I once read an
interview with Mschu confirming this, he said that out on the track he
hardly hears the engine at all, but when he has to rev it in the garage
it is quite scary.

By the way, drivers wear ear plugs to block out the other cars.

Not sure about the engine noise but in a very recent interview Mika
Hakkinen mentioned the overall noise being so loud that all the radio
transmissions between the driver and the pits have to be conducted in a
very brief manner and only when driving through the slowest parts of the
track. This way there's actually a possibility that the driver can
clearly hear the messages radioed to him. Either the noises _are_ loud,
Hakkinen is suffering of a hearing loss or McLaren is having some serious
problems in this area.

And they sure arent Stewart GP cars....

Thats right, they use them to stop being deafened from cars in front
of them or beside them. Ever stood behind an F1 car being revved? What
about the guys in the mid-field? Surrounded by 14000rpm V10s and V8s!
The exhausts point way back from the driver, so the exhaust note is
much muted when actually driving the car.

That is true, but don't you think that about 0.2sec is needed for the
engine to come from "0" to "17500"rpm's ? I know the game simulates a
800bhp car, but that is what I think simply too much. I also think that
the tire's sound is not good either - the tires usually squeel (or
squeak, don't know english that well) way before you spin. I am playing
the game qiute some time now and am getting quite used to it, but still
think that the sounds should be patched (or at least the moment when a
certain sound should accur).

Ce'ya on the track ;)

Agreed Jeff. I haven't had the privilege of sitting in an F1 car but I'd
like to wager they're a darn sight noisier than the Formula Ford I have
driven. Maybe cadenza should have changed the... "He is in front of the
engine" to "the engines' just behind his head" - Sort of gives a unique
stereophonic perspective to that screaming V10/12 etc.
