Tired of Win95 jerkiness!

by Faytov » Thu, 17 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Okay, I've finally had it!  I bought a new machine a couple of months ago and
have been playing F1RS (v1.09), the GPL demo, and MTM2 as my first forays into
Win95 sims.  The problem is, sandwiched between my 30+fps are the much talked
about Win 95 jerks and pauses.  I get about one per lap in F1RS, some worse
than others, and an occasional (but less severe than F1RS) jerk in GPL.  MTM2
also does it a little also.  I've tried seemingly everything.  I've read David
Greene's FAQ for F1RS and tried all of that plus other stuff (permanent swap
files, vcache changes, empty system tray etc. etc.) and just can't get
perfectly smooth ALL the time like the old DOS sims (makes me want to go back
to N2 and ICR2 sometimes) which really pisses me off after spending all that
money on a new system.  Here's my system specs:

P2-400MHz Intel Motherboard
4MB STB Velocity
12MB Diamond Monster 3D2 (clock speed in middle of slider)
128MB - 100MHz RAM
11.5GB (8GB free) hard drive
Win 95 - OSR2
2XDVD

If anybody has any ideas I would appreciate it immensely.  Also, if anyone
knows of a good site for tuning up Win95 for 3D ***, that might help also.
One thing I was wondering was whether or not my Voodoo 2 card might be getting
too hot.  I have most of my slots filled up so air flow might not be good
enough.  I thought I remembered people talking about getting rid of jerkiness
by cooling their cards down.

I'm putting a nail in the wall to hang my Bill Gates dartboard while I wait for
responses...

Have you tried going to System Properties and set the CD ROM to no read
ahead, and then move the slider all the way to the left (min cache)?
Cause I have heard that this will fix some jerkiness in CD games due to
the fact that the files on a CD are not quite lined up right for read
ahead caching, and that the cache size is too small anyway to help
buffer the data.

I had a similar problem after installing MS Office. Office installed
FindFast. This stupid little program is supposed to periodically scan your
hard drive for documents so it can build up an index. During GP2 it would
decide to go ahead and search my disk of course wrecking my race.

It's simple - take it out of the StartUp folder

If thats the problem - it may be this simple - not a hardware prob

Before you run your game, make sure nothing is running in the
background.

Do a CTL-ALT-DEL and select "End task" for each item in the list
except Explorer and Systray.

You need to do this for each item in the list:
        CTL-ALT-DEL
        Select item in list
        Click the "End Task" button

Some items will not disapear right away.  It will take a little time,
it may even ask you for confirmation to end the task.  Just get it so
the only things in the list are Explorer and Systray.

Hope this helps,

Paul

If it seems to happen about every 60 seconds or so you probably have TCP/IP
installed in networking and it goes out and searches for a DHCP server every
60 seconds.  This usually only happens if you have a Network card in your
machine. You can fix this by removing TCP/IP from the Network card (not a
good ideal if you are using the Network card for Internet, probably not
unless you are connecting with ISDN or cable modem) or you can request a
static IP from your ISP if you are using the Network card or you can create
a profile that disables the Network card for  gameplay (probably the
easiest).  If you have any specific questions about this, feel free to
e-mail me.  This really sounds like the problem you are having.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Thanks for the responses guys.   I always "ctrl-alt-del"  and end all tasks
except Explorer and Systray so that isn't the problem.  Chris' answer might
actually be it since I do have one of those Gamelan parallel port network
adapters networked to my old computer.  I have a multiple boot configuration so
that the Gamelan isn't active when I normally boot up but I'll definitely have
to investigate this angle thoroughly.

Thanks again,

I think the TCP pause is every 5.5 minutes.  Do you have a permanent swap
file?
