I'm thinking about buying this game today.  Is it any good?  I've only seen a
few screenshots and a review but it looks hella cool.

You can go to AltaVista Usenet search or DejaNews and search on the title of the
game.  A bunch of people have posted 'reviews' of the game already and you may
wish to look through them for a variety of opinions and possible hardware
issues.

One of those posts will be mine, but in a nutshell, I love this game.  The
driving is not quite a sim experience, but it is challenging enough not to be
100% arcade.  It is more like an 'environmental sim'.  The city and the people
and traffic in it are modelled fairly well.  You have a small but interesting
selection of cars and the mini-games presented within the context can be very
challenging.

The online multiplayer action is fast-paced, free, and fun.  (MSN Zone or IP to
IP)  On several occasions I have lost hours playing online and found myself
grinning from ear to ear and drenched in sweat.

Apparently the game is memory-hungry, so if you have less than 64 MEG, you may
have some troubles running it smoothly.

All in all, worth the 35$ or whatever you have to pay for it.  Put in
perspective, there are lots of things you could spend that $ on and have less
fun for less time.

OK, thanks a lot Daxe.  It should run pretty smoothly on my P2 400 mhz with 64
MB RAM and a 12 meg voodoo2 card then.  And I'm a true sim lover, but there's
some arcade racers that are probably as fun to drive on as any sim almost (San
Fransico Rush on the N64 and F1WGP on the N64 are two that come to mind.
Arcadish as hell but the AI cars are such a challenge to beat!).  I'll call up
my local Babbages right now and see if they still have a copy.

It is the best arcade racer in years. It really revitalizes what had
become a tired genre. Check out the reviews on the net, they'll all
tell you the same thing.

Also, with the graphics set to the level that befits your
Voodoo2, you'll find tht 64 meg might not be enough.  If you
experience some stuttering, turn off any windows apps.

A lot of recent games out run better with greater than
64 megs.  Since its so cheap, I went and upgraded mine to 128 meg.

Check out the review at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

It got 5 out of 5 stars and a reviewer award:

"Overall: Midtown Madness easily transcends the boundaries of racing games.
Its appeal is unlimited and gameplay totally ***ive. Right now, you can't
play a better game!"

Buy it!  It's a blast!

I'd like to answer on this... I'm having as much fun with it as I do with San
Francisco Rush.  ;-)

Playing on the Zone is where the you'll probably end up spending most of
your time with MM.

I guess it would be closest to a cross between Vette and
Harley-Davidson LA Riders. I don't think they geographic area modeled
is quite as big as LA Riders though. The only other thing I would
mention is that it's the first game since NFS1 to sometimes give me
feelings of being in a movie car chase scene [as we here the sounds of
Mark grabbing car keys and doing real-life racing to the computer game
store ;-].

A fair bit less, since I finished all races - though there is a race
editor coming out (i.e., place your own checkpoints) that will
certainly having me playing again. And even now I get it out once
every couple days for a spin.

Mind you, I should also point out I would be playing it more, but I
have just received a beta copy of "Need for Speed 4 - High Stakes"
which I will be reviewing when it goes gold (btw, NFS4 seems like a
much better game than NFS3, which I tired of quickly).

I see by the posts below that you have purchased it and like it.  It
is a great game, BUT.... As has happened throughout the history of
computer games, there is always someone raising the ante.  This time,
it looks like it'll be "Driver" by ______(? can't remember the
developer).  I think it's due to be out this fall, and is similar to
MM, but with more goodies.

Midtown is fine by me until then!

I was looking forward to Driver as well, but I saw it at E3
and was hugely disapointed.  The driving mechanics and
physics weren't even in the same class as Midtown.

Driver did have a very cool replay mode.  It looks like that
is the focus of the game.  It's like Carmagedon...sure it's a
racing game, but the focus is on running over people.  If
you want great mechanics and physics then Midtown is
the game.
