Could this be the reason GPL doesn't sell??

by Luis Sot » Sun, 13 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I've finally blown it...

After almost two years of messing with this sim,
After constant practice,
After numerous hardware upgrades with GPL in mind (including a LWFF),
After all the hints, advice, setups, etc., from the various web sites
After day after day of hundred lap practices,
After completely alienating my wife,
...this is all I've got to show for myself...
1:24:50 all-out, kamikaze, shift-r every other lap, personal best at Mosport
(Ferrari)
1:06:00 same as above, at Watkins Glen (Lotus)
1:28:00 same as above, at Monza (Ferrari -- OK, that one's not so bad)
I don't even want to mention Monaco, Mexico or Spa, and I have never really
gotten far enough in the game to drive any of the other tracks.  And after
all that, I am told I'm still a good 3 seconds off the pace, at
least...Well...I know I must be doing something FUNDAMENTALLY wrong with
this thing...Any help?

Completely in awe of most of you,
Luis "Lawnmower" Soto

I bought it the day it came out. You are better than me. In truth the
sim is really that difficult. It's not that you are doing anything wrong,
you (and I) are not Jim Clark, or even Jo Bonnier for that matter.

I've moved on the DTR and SCGT!

I've done the same as you and am in the same position as you are now, so
your not alone but I'm going to persevere because if nothing else it good
relaxing way to end winter evenings without doing something to do with work
or spending money in the pub? which has got to help when the wife barks.

I do have the hardware to run the game but the game is really, really
difficult.  It takes too much concentration on driving.  Driving in GPL is
not "fun" but is carefully planned.  Maybe that was the way cars behaved
back then.  Breaking in the corners, you are dead.  One of the wheel locks
up during breaking, you are dead.  Applying too much throttle on exiting a
sharp turn, you are dead.  It gets scary when the Als are behind you.  If
you are too slow in entering a turn, some of them will ramp into you.  Those
cars are not that forgiving.

I guess so but all I drive is my Ford Escort 92.  The speed tops out at 85
mhp. :-)

It does help when the wife barks...although I struggle to explain such
*** to her.
After reading the thread my post has started, I calmed down, got in a better
mood, and turned that 1:24:50 into a 1:24:40.  HEY, I'll take a thousandth
at a time, and thank you all, for the encouragement, and the slap in the
face I sorely needed...

Are we sure this is only a game?

I have been playing this sim for about a year now
and i have times very close to yours. I always tell
myself I'm going to go faster and sometimes months
go by and nothing, then all of a sudden my times fall
a little bit more and I'm hooked again. My wife has given
up the idea of the other woman but i think she's not sure
which would take more of my time. Everytime i make an
upgrade to my computer it is only to make GPL happy,
I don't play anything else on my computer, I'm ***ed.
One thing i can't figure is how these guys do a 3.13 at
spa, the best i can do in the eagle is a 3.21 and i figure
I'm flying and that is after about a 1000 laps. Anyways
don't get me started after drinking a few beers and racing,
I just love this sim. Good luck everyone with your times and
remember don't give up just keep plugging away sooner or
later you will be there with the best.
Steve!

If you compare yourself to the fastest laps of all time you will
probably will just get frustrated, race your own race and just try to
beat your own PB's.
The best way to improve is to know ALL the tracks. Each track need's to
be driven in a certain way and you'll learn more skills because of it.
With all the skills you have learnt at other tracks you can use them at
one track and turn a fast time. You will not learn much if you just race
Monza and the Glen all the time.

I've been at it nearly as long and am only a bit slower than you.
Recently I have downloaded the replays of a couple of the hotlappers
and started studying them.  I THINK it is helping.  I refuse to give
up.  And yes, I think so, in answer to you subj. question.

Huh??  He's clearly stating an opinion that the difficulty factor in
this sim appears to be part of the sales problem with this sim.  In his
opinion.  Then he backs up his premise with personal hard numbers & asks
for assistance.

Geez.  You'd think he'd made a compliment on a Ubi product.  ;-)
