Driver: Any Good? and will it fly on my antique system?

by Stewar » Sat, 23 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Last night at PC World I saw Driver running on a PC and I thought it looked
pretty good.  It was linked up to a MSFF wheel, however there appeared to be
a massive deadzone and I assumed that this was because before I tried it out
the wheel had been rolling about floor (some kid had just dropped it of the
desk!).  I have since read post here that this may be down side to this
game.

I am also a bit concerned that my AMD K6/II-266 with a CLBanshee and W95
might not do the game justice.  My wheel is a LWFF connected thro' a com
port.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Driver does have a rediculous controls-system, but now that I got used to it
it rocks! From what I know about programming the issues with the controls
should be easy to fix - let's hope for a soon patch.

Not quite sure about your system, but Driver offers pretty much tweaking. It
*could* work.

Amen. However, the gameplay relies on stupid features like the
'burnout button', so they would have to redesign more than just the
controls to give us basic features like somewhat realistic gas and
brake.

Agreed, but I would not expect too much of the original poster's
machine (K6-2 266 / Banshee) with regard to Driver performance. I own
a well tuned (if I may say so myself) K6-2 400 with a V3 2000 AGP, and
I don't feel the system has a lot spare power when running Driver.
When I max out the drawing distance front and rear, things start to
get choppy. And this on a computer that runs GPL with 19 opponents in
1024 x 7something with more than 30fps all the time (except on the
grid, of course).

Agreed.  I have a P266 System, 96M RAM, 2 Creative Voodoo2s SLI'd, and
the game gets choppy as hell if there are more than 2-3 cops after me.
And that's with details cranked down and most "extras" turned off
(particles, skidmarks, etc).  Really a shame, though.  The gameplay is
so fun, but the control and graphics speed aren't really up to today's
standards.

I can only imagine this game with truly fluid graphics.  It must be
nice!

I don't normally pay attention to the playstation platform, so excuse
me if this is a silly question: Does the playstation (and/or Driver on
the Playstation) support force-feedback devices?

Thanks, --mK
