What's the ideal gear ratio for Monza in GP2?

by Allan Ta » Mon, 11 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I have been tinkering with gear ratios for the MOnza track in GP2.
However, it seems that the maximum speed I can obtain is around 204mph,
with 6th gear set at 65 and 5th gear at 60. Does anybody out there have
any ideas on the best gear ratios?

Secondly, it seems that the best lap times using auto transmission is
about 3 seconds off the times recorded by manual transmission. Can anyone
verify this? A friend did around 1:22 using manual transmission, but I
can only manage around 1:24.5 using auto transmission. I also cannot
cross the start/finish line at more than 200mph. What is wrong?

Cheers,
Allan Tay

This depends on the rest of the setup. If you leave the wings in the
pits you might go with 66 in 6th gear. But then you'll have the hardest
time to come out of parabolica at a decent speed.
Even in Monza top speed isn't everything.

The auto transmission shifts *reasonably* while with manual trans. you
can shift down to first gear at any speed, what the auto trans. doesn't
do. So many gp2 racers use the gears as extra brakes and manage to brake later.
This can easily make those 2 seconds. Concerning s/f, it's probably that
the auto transm. shifts to 6th earlier.

Frank

I also have 204mph top speed. 6 th gear ratio 64. Time 1:23.7 with
automatic transmission, but others are much faster. Check your friend
perf. analysis graphics, and compare them to yours (
foreground/background ). He's probably braking a little later, and on
the throttle a little faster exiting the chicanes.

Hi Allan!

The best I can tell you is to type http://www.volftp.vol.it/GP2 on
