Website for the historic CANAM series ?

by Olav K. Malm » Thu, 01 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I have been reading with great expectations of the new CANAM sim in
development, but as a Norwegian who didn't get hooked on CART until 1997 I have
really no clue about american racing history, specially sportscars, since it
seems like that kind of racing nowdays are just for the enthusiast.

Not that I don't enjoy sportcars, I think it is great to watch. Is has a
different atmosphere that openwheel racing, and the series looks more
enthusiastic that much other kind of racing. Watching sportcars gives me
some of the same feeling i got when i first watched CART compared to F1.

Are there any websites with pictures, track-maps and so on witch cover the
CANAM and IMSA series the last 20-30 years or so ?

(Boy what a messy post, I haven't had my morning coffe break yet :)

Sports car racing in the U.S. has struggled for several years.
Escalating costs finished IMSA. Can-Am was great in its' day but
that was 30 years ago...:-)

I understand the same thing goes for Europe. I remember some
outrageous C1 cars in the World Championship but apparently that
series got too expensive too. At least we still get some factory
entries at LeMans.

I got hooked on Prototypes when I first saw Steve McQueen's "Le
Mans".  The Porsche 917's & especially the long-tailed rabbits
were outrageously neat racers.

This site has loads of links for all kinds of vintage racing:

Including this one for Can-Am:

Heh.  It's 2:30 A.M. in California & I just guzzled a huge cop of
java...tweaking GPL...:-)

Aside from the previously mentioned sites for vintage info, you can check out

for more current Stateside sportscar racing.
